PlayStation 5 gets variable refresh rate support this week

If you've been disappointed by the lack of variable refresh rate support on the PlayStation 5, then it's time to rejoice, as Sony is rolling out VRR on the PS5 later this week. Designed to improve performance, frame pacing, and prevent screen tearing, variable refresh rate support allows the PlayStation 5 to match the refresh rate of your TV or monitor, providing you use an HDMI 2.1 cable, and screen that supports such a connection. A handful of PS5 games will also be getting patches to make use of the new feature, including Spider Man-Remastered and Miles Morales, Resident Evil Village, Deathloop, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, and more, with further titles to get updates in the future.
  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

Two things got my attention on this.

1- I learned now that it was not a feature yet, If I were to guess, I would say that even the PS4 Pro had that. G-Sync and specially Free-Sync are available in a lot of displays on sale now, I guess it goes beyond half of current displays. They made a huge deal about HDR years ago, I argue that for gaming it is less relevant than variable refresh rate.

2- those people love lists. Every single feature since PS4 Pro come with a list attached with it. NOTHING is system default, even PS4 support on PS5 is a list.

Sony is lucky that their only real competitor is Nintendo, that somewhat manages to be even more archaic tech wise on a tech business.

Why does the PS5 even have screen tearing at all. I remember screen tearing was an issue in PC games 25 years ago, and we are only just now solving it with some consoles games?
I don't think screen tearing is the issue here. there are some games which have unlocked fps, but can't hit 60 fps constantly, so this games will profit from this, I think input lag overall will improve. and they propably could unlock games to run in 80-100fps and market them as 120hz.

PS5 is still in beta and was released too early imo. the entire launch has been a disaster and has ruined sony's reputation with me.

they should have just started making these and not started selling them til about now. they oculd have had a much better launch and not been seen as a manufacturing joke where tehy cant even make units to supply their customers.

is this a system update or just updates for games? I have a couple of those games, but they're not on my home list, which afaik, is the only stuff that updates automatically or even manually. my ps5 has not updated, so I assume it's not out yet.

I guess you need connections. I wouldn't have been able to find a ps5, series x, or an oled switch without one of my best friends' help. he sold me a ps5 (new) at cost. he actually found 5 ps5's and sent me a link to where I could buy one to sell, but I didn't have the money at that time. he also sent me a link to the series x and oled switch, both of which I bought from best buy. I know it's very difficult, but they're out there. ;)

It's true, but I'm not even sure this generation ever will be ready or fully established anymore. Living through this whole End Times bullshit has really done a number on many things, including the business model of these consoles.

you're one of my best friends as well.

even though most of these games are on both the ps4 and the ps5, I prefer the ps5's for the fast loading mostly, but most of these extras like uhd or high refresh rates I can't enjoy considering my tv is incapable of them. I don't plan to get a new tv until this one dies. it's not even a smart tv, so that's a bummer.

Your TV should still handle 60hz as long as the HDMI switcher does, which I believe most do up to 1080p. It's probably mainly the 4k and HDR you're missing. Only very expensive TVs have 120hz and are any PS5 games even really capable of that?

yeah, that's what I meant. the extras that the ps5 provides over my ps4 phat. my tv actually has a vga and component port, but can't do 240p like most tvs these days, so I have a framemeister for that. I've thought about buying an actual snes, but those are expensive as hell now for some reason. btw, I responded to you on discord.
