If you have a DS Phat/Lite and not a DSi, you're gonna want to get a GBA flashcart. The available options for playing GBA games using only a DS flashcart are not that great.

Every ROM hack I've tried, in .nds format, has worked for me off a modern R4 card. For older ones, you may have to use DLDI Tool on the nds file to get it to work. Admittedly, I've only tried two and just to see if they'd load.

Edit: I misread. You're talking about GBA ROM hacks, not Nintendo DS ROM hacks. My bad.

Last I looked many years ago the only ways to play GBA games on the DS involved something in slot 2 (GBA flashcart or Ez flash 3 in 1).

These days unless you want the extra functionality, the GBA flash cart might be the better option.

Just get GBABF for your R4 card, and use it to flash romhacks onto bootleg carts from AliExpress. That's what I do. Custom labels can be made on Etsy.
