Your closest bet would be to get Jam with the Band, a European game for the Nintendo DS (or its Japanese counterpart, Daigasso! Band Brothers DX. There is no US counterpart, so do not ask). It has a feature in which you can preview many types of instruments through a piano setup. You can also pick any range of notes you want.

There is a homebrew game called "Game Melody Oratorio", but as far as I know it will only allow you to play whatever is premade into the file and nothing custom.

I have not tried it and I cannot find info on the game that mentions a free play mode, so it is a simple mistake to make.

If you have a DSi, or DSi XL, you can get the instrument tuner on there for 200 points, and it has a mini piano like that.

The only thing with it is that it doesn't support multi-touch... so you can't play any chords or anything.
