Gaming Physical Game Install Question

Hi guys. My Switch has an 256GB mSD card and most of my games are digital. Thing is, I am quickly running out of room on the mSD card. If I get more physical games, does system install the physical game, or does it only install a small portion? Am not really sure how that works. Thoughts and help greatly appreciated

Updates, DLC, and Game saves are stored on the system. Not the entire cartridge data. For some games this can still be quite large.
