Gaming Physical Game Install Question

Hi guys. My Switch has an 256GB mSD card and most of my games are digital. Thing is, I am quickly running out of room on the mSD card. If I get more physical games, does system install the physical game, or does it only install a small portion? Am not really sure how that works. Thoughts and help greatly appreciated :)

Updates, DLC, and Game saves are stored on the system. Not the entire cartridge data. For some games this can still be quite large.
