Hardware phat ps3 Eject/power "buttons" mod?

i wanted to know if it is possible to mod the phat ps3 power/eject "buttons" to use real push buttons like a nintendo ds l and r button to turn the ps3 on and eject the disk?
has anyone done this before and if you have how hard was it
