Taken from SlashDot

"SD cards with a theoretical maximum capacity of 2TB are in development by Panasonic and the SD Association, it has been announced. The technology is called 'Secure Digital Extended Capacity', or 'SDXC', and Panasonic has announced it will soon show off a 64GB SDXC card. Using the new technology, read/write speeds are set to hit 300MBps. SanDisk and Sony are using the same standard to develop Extended Capacity cards in Sony's Memory Stick Pro and Memory Stick Micro range. SDXC utilises Microsoft's new exFAT file system — AKA 'FAT 64' — which first appeared in Windows Vista SP1, and has a theoretical file size limit of 16 exbibytes." Reader xlotlu adds a note about the "proprietary exFAT file system, which is available for licensing under NDA. There are currently no specific patents on exFAT, but its legal status is uncertain since it's based on FAT. The FAT patents have been previously upheld in court."

But one has to question, what practical application would one have for a 2TB memory card?

No, no... MEMORY CARD... not HARD DRIVE... I can see putting Porn/Music/Anime and what not on a hard drive, but who's gonna put it on a MEMORY CARD!

I know, but I find it hard to believe that a 2TB worth of space would come on an SD card first, instead of an HDD.
2TB of space on an SD card would serve as a sort of external HDD that doesn't take up any space I guess

Flash memory is faster to read from, if I'm correct, and is obviously smaller.

The only reason I have to question the usefulness of these is that it won't be using the SDHC standard, which means buying new pain-in-the-ass card readers, after I just got a computer with one built in. Then again, I guess I won't have to worry of another two or three years, anyways, and it probably won't even happen.

Just before I lost my 500gig external, I clocked in every NDS release from 0001 to about 3100 to be about 20-25gig... and this is a 2TB card...

So for all the pirates out there keeping score, with a 2TB card in your Slot1, you can have every NDS game, every DSi game, every DSiWare/VC, and still have over 50gig of porn (regular or anime), your entire collection of music (from various p2p), and Star Trek TOS/TNG/DS9/Voyager/Enterprise FULL series (every episode), and still have room!

Do you know much pron one could put on 2TB? That's like a library, and you could possibly insert every DS game known to man on there and still have enough room!

It's great that they're thinking ahead. We don't see any use for it now, but I remember that 1 GB for an SD card seemed completely crazy to me a few years ago. Nowadays, 1 GB is really small, even for MicroSD!

Do we even have 2TB HDD'S?
no, but by the time those 2TB's are out we'll have atleast 12TB HD's(that's 6 of those in raid in the form of an SSD)
also, this is only a theoretical limit.
it's not that they can have those for $50 in stores by next month, they will have to slowly build up the size.

besides, i read somewhere that SDHC technology already supports up to (theoretical, read a few lines higher)2TB, however they purposely built in a 32GB limit.

While it's great that we can have things that store so much data, we're gonna have to retrofit the existing technology (or eliminate it altogether) in order to make actual use of it. Regular SD card readers can't detect SDHC, and SDHC probably can't detect SDXC. And that's just card readers. What about computers and the like?

Also, it's gonna be a long while until this stuff is feasibly cheap. =P
