Posted this question in the guide thread, but maybe it would be better off here.

I just updated my wii to system menu 4.2 through a nintendo update so that I can play New Mario Bros wii. Everything worked except homebrew (obviously). So I went through the guide to modify 4.2 wii's and now homebrew works, but I can't play games that require the 4.2 menu. My menu on the wii system says 4.2u.

What happened?

There are no games that "require" system menu 4.2
So what do you mean by that?

If you mean the disc channel wants to update, you can get startpatch/preloader to block updates

This is a very useful thread. I recently experienced problems with the 'unauthorised device detect error' due to cios versions. Is that the kind of thing you want adding to the spready?

Cheers

the front page needs to remove the part about not upgrading to 4.2 and going to 4.1

as u can do everything needed on 4.2 and its safer to stay on it than 4.1

I don't know about it being safer than 4.1, but I removed the message anyway

This guide is absolutely imposible to follow with all of the <> crap going on

good luck following a 3 years old guide.
Look for modmii; there should be a sticky somewhere.

This guide is old and shouldn't be followed.
In fact it isn't even a guide, just a list of "essential info".

Either way locked it goes.
