The death in the first chapter made me sad. I didn't know what to expect from the chapter title about a funeral. And when it hit, i didn't quite come to tears, but it was still very sad none-the-less.
Okay, I'm having trouble with all Mother 3 roms. I downloaded an english patched rom and tried to play it. It played, but the graphics were patchy and weird. I pressed new game and the naming part had black bars going vertically down the screen, so I couldn't see any letters. Help? I am using Linux Mint 11
I have never played the Mother series before, but then I decided I wanted to and did some research, and I set out to play the series in chronological order last month, but I made sure I played specific versions to minimize continuity errors. The versions I played are:
Mother 1: Mato's translation of Mother 1 on the Mother 1+2 rom (the script is re-translated, and connections to M2 and M3 are used when possible. This means the final boss is named Giygas, not "Gigue". It's by the same guy that did the Mother 3 translation)
Mother 2: I found this random patch that changes all instances of "Pokey" to "Porky". I'm glad I did, because now it's engraved in my head that his name is Porky. Also it changes offensive PSI moves to PK, just like Mother 1 and Mother 3.
Mother 3: The one and only translation patch, of course
A couple of weeks ago I finally beat Mother 1, and played through it on my GBA-SP with EZ Flash IV. Was really an amazing game. Then I played through Mother 2(EarthBound) on my Wii. I finally beat Mother 2 yesterday, and that was a pretty crazy final boss...
So I started playing Mother 3 today, on my GBA-SP + EZ Flash IV.
When Flint found out his wife died, I honestly felt really really bad for him. That immediately set off a dark atmosphere to the entire game that's now engraved in my head.

Do you have any links to patches for M 1+2 ? I've played the Earthbound Zero NES rom, but that was an official translation.. and from what I understood the patch for M 1+2 was just this patch.
Also has M 2 for GBA been translated into english? I heard that it wasnt translated or even copied from the Earthbound script due to the way the text was coded in. I love Mother 2 but it feels disjointed if I play M1 or M3 because of the localised script (Pokey.. grrr). I've wanted to go through these again on my GBM but I only had luck with Mother 3. Great game, shame the series didn't get released in full to the west
Wasn't Mother 1 an NES title, Mother 2/Earthbound an SNES title, and Mother 3 GBA, but then Mother 1+ 2 was released on the GBA and later fully translated?
EDIT: Never mind, the M1+2 patch only translates Mother 1 entirely and does basic translating of Mother 2. http://earthboundcentral.com/2011/04/mother-12-translation-released/
I highly recommend using these exact patches when playing through the Mother series, as there are no continuity errors. Most people play the English NES prototype of Mother 1, then the plain old SNES EarthBound rom, then Mother 3, but there are lots of problems if you play like that, such as Gigue & Giygas, PK & PSI, Pokey & Porky, and a lot of enemy and item names.
From what I've read, the guy behind the Mother 3 translation tried to keep connections to EarthBound as much as possible. He did the same with his less-popular Mother 1 translation. His translation is much better than the NES prototype, and here's why:
*PSI move names are consistent with Mother 2 and Mother 3
*Item names are consistent with Mother 2 and Mother 3
*Enemy names that appear in multiple games are finally consistent
*The entire script was re-translated, so references to God and alcohol are kept
*The final boss has his name corrected to Giygas
I played Mato's translation of Mother 1 on my GBA using EZ Flash IV, then I played EarthBound using the Porky patch on my Wii with Snes9xGx, and I just started Mother 3 using the English translation patch on my GBA using EZ Flash IV.
You know how in Mother 2/EarthBound, when Giygas attacks you it says, "You cannot grasp the true form of Giygas's attack!" Well, since I played Mato's Mother 1 translation before I played Mother 2/EarthBound in any form, when I saw that line in Mother 2, I was like, "Hey, I remember that line! It's exactly what it says when Giygas attacks in Mother 1!" That's because Mato made it so that the line is exactly the same in his Mother 1 translation. But then I looked on YouTube to see what the line is on the English NES prototype, and it's something different like, "The form of Gigue's attack is not understandable!". Wooow haha, that's a connection lost right there for people playing the NES prototype.
Basically that's another reason to never play the NES prototype and always use Mato's Mother 1 translation, because of little connections like that XD
Yeah the prototype was the one I've played since I thought it was the same translation used for the GBA translation. A few of those lines kind of irked (?) me a bit when I was playing through.. you go from EB-0 translation to EB translation then to M3 fan-translation.. I can't wait to get thise fixed up tonight. It's worth playing Mother 1 on my GBM instead of PSP for this
Really interesting posts. Didn't know about the Earthbound patch. Is there a Mother 1/Earthbound Zero rom translation patch with the translation of the gba rom? I want to play it on the original hardware.

You mean the NES rom but with Mato's 2011 script? I'm afraid no one has made that yet. But I'm thinking about possibly doing it someday. I'm tired of looking up final boss videos of Mother 1 on Youtube and seeing "Gigue" instead of "Giygas".

If it bothers you THAT much, you can always use Mato's tools to change any of the script yourself. I did a lot of work with the script and boy is it hard to work with MOTHER 2, but MOTHER is SUPER easy. You literally just have to copy and paste the names and replace them in the instances you want the to.
Yes, that's exactly what I meant I want the closer-to-the-original feeling while playing on the nes, but the accurate translation of the Mato Translation. Sad to hear that nobody has done that.
I play the NES Earthbound Zero because I don't really care about the names being different, but if someone made a patch that changed that, I would use it.
But I almost finished Earthbound Zero, so by the time a patch is made, I won't need it anymore.

For the life of me, I can't get that EB patch to work (the Porky one). The file to patch is Earthbound, right? If so, do you use the "Earthbound (U) [!]" rom?
The game just ends up corrupt and doesn't boot
Lemme know!
EDIT: It was the ROM, looks like the one marked Good ([!]) in the GoodSNES set doesn't like patches. Oh well.

I use the Snes9xGx emulator on Wii, and it works fine. Except it slows down in areas where there are a lot of people (like that one building in the Happy Happy Village with a crapload of blue people), and I have no idea if it does that on actual SNES hardware. Although I am aware of EarthBound's hilarious anti-piracy measures, so just-in-case I used a checksum-fixer on the rom. I got to the final boss and nothing bad happened. What's awesome is that my first playthrough of EarthBound, I used the Porky patch, so it's now forced into my head that Porky is the main antagonist, not this weird "Pokey" name I hear sometimes. When I think of the final boss, the first thing that comes to my head is, "Heavily Armed Porky".

I use Snes9xTYL on PSP Actually, I'm now fearing for the checksum. Maybe I should fix that too, I dunno. Yeah, I feel a slight lag here too, but nothing major.
So I looked into hacking Mother 1/EarthBound Zero, and yes, as Schlupi said, the text system is really simple. But I can't just copy+paste the text, I need something that can repoint the offsets of all the text pointers because the lengths of the texts are different between EB0's script, and Mato's M1 script. This is my first time NES hacking, so excuse me if there are such tools available, but I can't find any. And I seriously doubt that Mato painstakingly repointed every single line of text in the game, according to his source, he has his own tool that finds the table and does the repointing for him. But that's for Mother 1+2, which is a GBA rom, not EarthBound Zero, which is a NES rom.
