THE GUILD GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE MULTIPLAYER GAMING
  1. Turn off voice chat
  2. Play the game
  3. ????
  4. PROFIT.
Every multiplayer game has a shit community to some extent. I always turn voice chat off. If you're really taking a multiplayer game so seriously that you actually need to coordinate or shout at people then you shouldn't be playing it.

Coordinating/teamwork is what makes game very fun too. On Skype with a few friends on a TF2 server, great fun, and a BIG help if you want to win the round.
And it's even a necessity if you want to play LoL semi-decent, communication is key there.

Also, on TF2 there are loads of servers that encourage voicechat, mainly for the fun off it and to help build a nicer community. That's one reason I always join the same server on TF2, because I know there are fun people there, people who tell jokes and curse at each other, sing while being drunk. Makes it so much more fun

Unless there is a ranking system in place to put you up with higher level players in a game, then you'll most likely be running into idiots and such. Halo 3 had a ranking system for social and ranked game types. You are matched with players of the same rank and when it comes to ranked game types at higher ranks, the players really get serious (most of them). Although the Halo series obviously isn't to everybody's liking, it has what you're looking for.
