Have you gotten a softbrick downgrading 10.6 to 9.2

  • Yes, but I kept trying and eventually it worked

Every time I try to downgrade my o3ds xl to 9.2 following the Plailect Guide (via Cubic Ninja) I get the "An Error Has Occured" black screen and have to use recovery mode to restore. This happened to me once on 10.3 as well, but by that time 10.5 had come out and I got stuck unable to try again after restoring.

I went to the #3dshacks IRC channel and a few other people reported the same issue. It sounds like reformatting from system settings fixes it, but I really don't want to reformat and lose my mii plaza etc.

I get the black screen whether or not the SD card is inserted, and it happens even when I remove the SD card right after the downgrade completes before restarting.

The downgrade in SysUpdater itself always succeeds and I get to the "press B to restart" message. Then it boots to the black screen. My best guess is something in my sysnand is crashing 9.2 on boot; I've had a 3DS since 2011 and this XL is a system transfer from my old ambassador 3DS, so it's possible I have something unusual in my nand.

Any ideas for things I could try that might get downgrade to succeed? Is "keep trying" worth it?

Alternative idea: would it be possible to system transfer back to my other (old) 3ds' emunand (installed CFW just fine on it), reformat+downgrade my XL, then system transfer back to the XL running a9lh?

Keep trying. Ambassador stuff shouldn't interfere.

I've exactly the same issue with my n3DS ambassador edition.

Just bought Cubic Ninja so I can try a lot of time but still...

I'm trying to avoid reformatting my 3DS. I would really like to not format my 3DS. I have tried backing up my SD card, reformatting it, and restoring.
Whats making you not want to format? Anything you have can be backed up or downloaded again later. Game saves can be backed up and games are easy to find. And restoring your 3ds usually fixed the soft brick problem :/

You can, but you can only do system transfers once every 7 days, so you would have to wait a week before transferring everything back.

What I would recommend assuming you have a hardmod or anyway to read the nand:
1) Backup the nand
2) Format the system
3) Downgrade the system
4) Get your OPT
5) Generate your arm9loaderhax.3dsx
6) Put original nand backup on SD as "nand.bin"
7) Run arm9loaderhax.3dsx

I've become very attached to my mii plaza over the last five years and I'd really like to keep it.

No hardmod, although maybe I should consider it ... I'd more likely just do two system transfers a week apart.

Which CIA does this fail on?

How can I tell? The sysUpdater downgrade completes successfully every time (using the "Old 3DS or 2DS 9.2.0 - USA" CIAs from the guide), I don't get the black "error occurred" screen until the 3DS reboots after the downgrade is finished.

I had to format my friends N3DS because it kept bricking and formating it fixed it and it fully downgraded. Id say this is a decision between cfw or your setup. It sucks but that may be what it comes down to unless you get a hardmod
