i think the big problem here is everybody's forgetting the special unlock code you have to put in along with the player names!
Konami and nintendo obviously were in this together.

3P: Bai
4P: ley

Then in game:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.

Yes, you have to use the secret map the first time or it won't work.
