It's here!

Info

@Normmatt has created a way to run B9S .firm files from bootrom via a DSi Flashcard and a magnet! This works on every 3DS on any firmware version.

For installation without a PC, user @TheCyberQuake has created a pack which will automatically install B9S and copy over essential starter homebrew from the flashcard's SD to the 3DS's. This will mainly be used for PC-less B9S installations. If you have a PC with you, use 3ds.guide. Read more here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/481141/

How does this work?

This works because of a flaw in the bootrom. Before the bootrom boots the NAND, it checks to see if Start+Select+X is held down, and if the shell is closed. If these requirements are met, it will boot an NDS cartridge from the bootrom. This give that cartridge bootrom access. You might be wondering how you'd hold down buttons while the shell is closed, and why you need a magnet. If you put a magnet in a specific spot on the 3DS, it will go into sleep mode. Using this, you can boot the NDS cartridge with the buttons held down while in sleep mode! Using a reflashable flashcard, you can boot B9SInstaller using the flashcard, and easily install it on your 3DS.
The 2DS doesn't need a magnet since a switch puts it to sleep instead of a magnet.

What does this mean?

  1. Any 3DS model on any firmware can be hacked with minimal effort
  2. You can unbrick any 3DS model from any type of brick.
    - Remember, you don't need a NAND backup for this. Just do a CTRTransfer.
    - This does not apply to MCU bricks.
  3. Even consoles with fried NAND, or even the NAND chip physically removed, can use this
This is incredibly impressive stuff, and will most likely be released soon! edit: now!

FAQ

Q: Can Nintendo patch this?
A: Nope! Not without a new hardware revision.

Q: My flashcard is blocked by my firmware! Can I still use this?
A: Yes! The flashcard blacklist is not enabled on the bootrom.

Q: Why can't this work with my flashcard?
A: The installation requires you to flash NTRBoot to the flashcard's nand. Most DS flashcards, such as the original R4, have a ROM, which is not flashable.

Q: Can I install NTRBoot on my flashcard without another 3DS system?
A: If you can run NDS roms on your 3DS with it, then yes. If it's blocked on your 3DS version, then you'll need another 3DS system to use it.

Q: Will my 3DS flashcard work?
A: No, only the NDSi flashcards listed above.

Q: Will any other flash cards work?
A: Only the ones listed in the OP. However keep in mind that flashcards such as the DSTT, Supercard DS2 and R4 SDHC Dualcore are planned to be supported in the future.

Q: I tried to do this with my cartridge and it didn't work?
A: It doesn't work with regular DS cards.

Q: Can I unbrick from a ____ brick?
A: Considering the card has access to the bootrom, yes! This can unbrick any brick (except MCU), unless you've taken a knife to the motherboard.

Q: Can I install B9S on the latest firmware with this?
A: Again, since the card has access to the bootrom, you can do this easily! Just plug in your flashcard, boot up using the magnet and button combination, and install.

Q: Does this work on the New Nintendo 2DS XL?
A: Yes!

Nice!
It's great to know that the NTR Boot hack has finally came to fruition!

I have one question...
A friend of mine lent me his O3DS (non-XL) to fix.
However, I cannot do much as the 3DS boots into a black screen.

The interesting here, is that once the 3DS is turned on, you can see both screens lit as they normally would before booting to the 3DS' home menu, but instead I get a black screen.
Even more insteresting, if I press the Power button once AFTER the screens have been initialized (like 10 secs or so after turning on the system), I DO enter the screen which asks me if I want to completely shut off the system or go back to the Home menu.

If I press Power button again, it shuts off normally, if I press Home button, I get stick in the "Home Menu" screen (the white one with the words Home menu) just hanging there without anything else.

Is this some sort of known brick?
And if so, would NTRBoot help me to bring this device back to life?
I've never personally heard of this issue, but if it is a brick, with ntrboot, you can theoretically boot into GM9 and get the necessary files to do a CTRTransfer to a 9.2 virgin NAND.bin, and see if the issue still persists.

Looks a lot like frankenOS, a cleant CTRtransfer should fix it (NTRboot)

nds-card raised the price on the R4i from $18 to $23. I'm glad I ordered yesterday because I was forecasting the price hike. Simple supply and demand.

Already got the PayPal email and payment confirmation email back. Shipping and tracking expected soon...

Thank you both for your answers!
I will give this a try and give it a CTRtransfer, hopefully I will be able to fix it.
If I do, I'll post the results here :)

It's unreasonably hard to get hold of these cards in the UK.

Should have bought it last week when I had the chance. But since I already have a soft mod on my 3DS it for others to get before the inevitable price hike.

Also, one other question.
Does someone know if the Gateway Blue card is compatible with NTRBoot?
I heard it is some sort of clone from another card but I'm not sure if it was the R4i Gold or another one.

Not as of yet, but it is a clone of ace3DS+, which is a sub $10 card. It is likely supporteable, but there are no plans for it as of yet.

Ah so it's aclone of Ace3DS+, nice to know.
Thanks for the heads up, perhaps I'll wait until support for the card comes around, as it's quite... difficult in my country :P
I have another R4itt.com card, perhaps I should try with that one.

My 2ds was bricked when I used safearm9hax installer with the wrong file. I can turn the console on with a SD card in as long as arm9loaderhax.bin is on the SD. If the file is not on the SD the console just switches off straight away. Either way there is black screen. I have tried using this method to unbrick by putting gm9 as boot.firm and using the button combo with my flashed ak2i but nothing happens. Also tried the magnet and button combo on my n3ds and o3ds with the same ak2i and nothing happens but when I remove the magnet the consoles go to the home menu. What am I doing wrong? Can someone do a video of this working on a o2ds so I can be sure I'm doing the combo right.

Is there / will there be any way of flashing ntrboot to my flashcard without access to a another hacked 3DS?
This prerequisite makes it basically impossible for me to get boot9strap onto my 2DS, because I don't know anyone owning a hacked 3DS, heck, I barely know anyone owning a 3DS at all!
So, any help will be highly appreciated.

There is a power saves method in the works...

There is a Powersaves method apparently, but that hasn't been shared yet. The OP should probably be updated to share that. You can see on 3ds.guide that a placeholder page for that method is there.

On 2DS, there's no magnet sensor. You have to enable the sleep mode switch instead.

EDIT: You are pressing Start+Select+X while powering on and holding the magnet on the O3DS/N3DS, right? (Same for 2DS, but with the sleep switch instead of a magnet.)

:s I'm hoping they didnt just miss my order, ordered a card from them about a week ago, made payment but haven't received any messages back yet regarding payment or order. I placed another order not too long ago, so i'm hoping that one gets processed quicker

Yes I am following the guide to the letter. I am holding start+select+X+power buttons with the sleep switch on or a magnet to trigger sleep mode (my magnet triggers sleep mode fine) but still black screen on 2ds. The o3ds and n3ds black screen until magnet removed then goes to home menu.

Yes, I've seen that. I hope OP will soon share that method, although I hate having to buy yet another something.
I wonder it would be worthwhile to ask in the forums if anybody lives nearby. Well, thank you for your answer. And thanks to Lush top (Don't wanna make another post for that:lol:).
