I recently taken a liking to a game called Angelique for the SNES but the english patch was not completed so i thought id give it a go and I just spent 6 hours translating a bit of the game but I am determined to go all out and patch it but i have no clue how and i have been researching a lot but i thought it would be better if i could get any advice for my specific situation. If anyone could send me in the right direction that would be much appreciated! This is my fist time posting and i hope i did everything ok.

How were you translating it? We you transcribing screenshots or something? If so stop that for now as it is not going to help much when it comes to the hacking bit.

Anyway translation of games via patches applied to the ROM you ultimately play with emulators and flash carts typically falls under the banner of ROM hacking, and might well be one of the biggest aspects of it depending upon what you want to look at.

I wrote a tutorial aimed at the GBA and DS here https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbatemp-rom-hacking-documentation-project-new-2016-edition-out.73394/ but other than the really in depth technical stuff it applies to basically every device out there. You will want to flank it with some documentation of the SNES hardware, https://wiki.superfamicom.org/ being a good start here. Various emulators will also have a bit. I am not sure what debugger emulator the kids are using for the SNES right now but https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/241/ usually did me well whenever I wanted to look at such things.

Romhacking.net (sometimes referred to as rhdn) above is also one of the primary ROM hacking sites out there, with lots of good info, https://www.romhacking.net/start/ being a choice thing to start with, and the forums there also having people versed in such things (I would not be surprised in the slightest to find someone here that can recreate all the key points of the wiki above from memory, but they might not be around here all the time, rhdn on the other hand pretty much has the 8-16 bit era consoles and some N64 stuff as a main focus).

I hack super mario world.

afaik most people are using bsnes' debugger or it's that snes9x build that fast6191 linked... I'd have to ask at some point. Been a while since I touched the game, heh.

In terms of patch files, SMWC made the switch from IPS to BPS around 2-3 years ago. From what I remember, BPS is superior. You can find it on SMWCentral or RHDN pretty easily. Apply these with Floating IPS.

If you need an assembler, which you can use to make edits to the rom on a really low level, use Asar. https://github.com/RPGHacker/asar I hope you know basic assembly, or at least know how to make byte tables work.

Don't use xkas, it's old and bad. Don't use TRASM either, which is older and even worse.

...I feel like nothing I said was helpful but idk.
