What up GBAtemp....I'm a new poster, but I've been lurking on this site for a little over a year now...I don't know why I waited so long to register...In fact, this website put me onto DS flash carts (own the OG R4

), which of course opened my eyes to modding. I know this thread being my first post is REAL n00b stuff, but I'm clueless on Wii modding and I want to get it done so as Christmas present for myself and little brother.

Anyways, I would like to softmod my Wii so that it can play backups off my 250GB external hard drive, that's the only thing I'm concerned with doing. But there's so many guides on the internet that I don't know what to use...Everything from Twilight Princess hack to BootMii, Homebrew Channel, etc. and I don't know what comes first? Can anybody help me out?

Here's some facts that may be needed:
-My Wii is a launch Wii. I don't know what firmware it's on, but it hasn't been connected online in a good year or so since I no longer have my WiFi Router.
-I have an SD card that I can connect to my computer and format.
-I have no trouble following specific instructions for softmodding!

I'm on 4.2U with BootMii as boot2. Apps on my SD card are showing up fine in the HBC (1.0.6) but they are not showing up when I put them on my external USB.

My USB drive has 2 partitions - primary is WBFS and secondary is NTFS.

How do I get the apps on my USB drive to show up?

I tried removing the SD card and keeping only the USB connected and then selecting "USB device" in the HBC menu but it's a no go.

your NTFS partition should be a FAT16 or FAT32 partition

Ok thanks for the reply. Won't FAT work?

Also, will MPlayerCE be able to read from a FAT16 or FAT32 partition?

I think it should be the other way round.
fat partition first and set to active and second partition wbfs

I hate to ask this. I'm sure the info is here somewhere and I thought I was past the newb stage after installing my WiiKey a couple of years ago. But man has things changed since then. I'll go months without playing the Wii or getting any new games so I had no idea what's been happening with it lately since my WiiKey has played everything I've tried except for something that just came out a couple of weeks ago.

I thought I could follow these 'easy' guides, but I think having this WiiKey installed is confusing things a little or either I'm more of a newb than is necessary.

Anyway.... Wii is at 4.2u. This was done before I realized any of these hacks needed to be done.

I have the HBC on.

And basically that's where I'm stuck at. I can't figure out how to get BootMii loaded onto the Wii. I did run it off the card and it said HBC was available to install (which I did) BootMii was ok to install to boot2 (which I thought I did and not 100% sure if it is or not) and dvdx is ok to install. I installed it but don't see it anywhere.

I backed up the NAND and it's in a safe place.

The guides I've read said preloaders are only needed for newer Wii's but doesn't hurt to do it on all. I can't get it installed. Is the WiiKey interferring?

I tried patching the CIOS and it failed (following the guide: Fully Softmod Any Wii (everything you need)).

I want to be able to eventually run games from a USB hard drive and load dl'd virtual games.

What is my next step if I may ask?

ioschecker or signcheck from wiibrew or from the homebrew browser

can i play a scrubbed image directly from my external?
should i use some program to 'unscrub' it and burn to disc or can i just burn to disc and it will play?

Hey everyone, long time homebrew user, first time backup loader user.

I've been relatively behind on the times with my Wii upgrading, both in the firmware number itself and any homebrew updates. I just recently updated to the newest homebrew channel, and have begun to learn the world of cIOS and disc/USB loaders. So far i've installed programs without issue, but today I hit my first big snag. Here's the situation:

I am trying to boot a game using Neogamma r7 (and now the latest R8 beta as well) but every time I run the backup from the disc, it gives me a 001 error. A quick google search turned up that this is because I am using an old cIOS (rev 9) and I should upgrade it to rev 14. I downloaded the cIOS rev 14 installer, however as soon as I run the program it will either crash and give me a screen of nonsense hex or will desych my wiimote from my system as soon as the screen pops up asking which IOS I would like to install to. I did some searches on this and I cannot find anything to help me fix this problem. Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT:

I should have mentioned that I have not upgraded my Wii's firmware at all. It is still using 3.2u.

Ok, got cios loaded on my 4.2u. Priiloader installed. BootMii comes up with SD card in. HBC browser works.

Loaded up latest neogamma. Booted up NSMB. Got to a second level and got 'an error has occured' message. Have already tried multiple brands of DVD-R's.

Got this same message when trying on just the WiiKey before loading softmod.

Any suggestions?

yep that'll work aswell but doesn't give you a file with listed IOS's, versions and which patches are applied
just to give the man more options. but of course signcheck is way better to check your ios/cios status. you are really giving most of your time longtom1 to help others. nice job man.

you gotta help out if nobody helped out we wouldn't know all we do about hacking the Wii

just stuff i've learned experimenting with different apps and soaking in the info from some of the more interesting threads and some of the more mundane treads

have you patched the ISO before burning and do you have the wip patches enabled and in the correct folder on your sd card

What are WIP patches? And what folder?

This info is not in the 'fully softmod any wii' threads.
