4:3 is the correct aspect ratio for most GC games.
Yes, most games are 4:3, but the GC's native aspect ratio is 16:11.2. (Really specific, huh?) Nintendont renders in 16:11.2 so it's accurate in that regard, but since, as you said, most games on GC are 4:3, games look squished. Non-digital TVs don't notice it due to overscan, but those that have digital TVs have the issue, even if the user doesn't notice. The GC aspect ratio can be a rather confusing topic.
This is why you see us complaining about widescreen patching because the few of us that do notice are being forced to have either our games squished, HUD and text stretched but 3D space normal, or everything stretched. The fact that the problem hasn't even been acknowledged by the devs, well, it just really pisses me off.
