My friend had a original switch modded. He doesn't remember whether he had auto-rcm on or not. I've put the jig in I've tried powering it on, I know I'm using the correct cable cuz I do it with my switch and it works fine. I'm trying to use my phone to boot the switch. Nothing comes up. When I plug my cable into the switch the light on the cable glows so it seems to be charging.

Not sure what's going on with his, any suggestions to try first.

Might be a faulty USB port on the Switch.
There are multiple power lines on the USB port but only 1 set of the datalines are used.
Sometimes the connector just goes bad.
With a flashlight you can check if there are pins missing or bent.
But usually it's the connection between the connector and the motherboard.

For checking whether you're on RCM :
Press the power button for 15 seconds and put the Switch on a charger for an hour .
Then press the power button for 2~3 seconds.
If it boots into the official firmware, then auto-rcm is off.
If you see a black screen faintly lighting up, then autorcm is on.
Sometimes it gets stuck in the autorcm mode and you need to turn it off by pressing power for 15 seconds.
Else injecting the payload will also not work.

Injecting the wrong version of Hekate should at least give you an error.

If you use a PC, then you can see whether the Switch is waiting for a payload to be injected.
With Rekado on Android you can't see this.
But since your cable is good, I suspectteh connector.

Sorry for the late reply, so i tested two Nintendo switches, mine and my friend. RCM shows green on my switch, when I plug his in, windows bottom right says USB malfunction.. so you think its the connector? Is it something that can be replaced and if so how.

The thing is, if the USB failed, wouldn't it not charge, or its possible it charges but cant make a USB connection fully. Cause yeah the switch has to be charging otherwise the PC wouldn't see it as soon as I plug it in.

Could it possibly be a mismatch of firmware/atmosphere/patches? You have to send the correct payload for the right version and have the correct atmosphere and patches for the firmware he's on.

Ask him when the last time was he updated?

Because if he is using autorcm he can be in rcm with a black screen (technically that's all autorcm is) and the Switch is just waiting for CFW to boot. If he's not using autorcm I believe the Switch should at least go to the main Switch UI, but that is something I haven't had happen in 6-7 years so I could be remembering wrong. Because that's how long I've used AutoRCM.

I didn't read your last post good before I posted. But you could still ask him if he was able to use the Switch on the firmware he was on since he last updated it. Maybe it even got updated through Nintendo servers then all of the files on his sd card are outdated and he won't be able to boot. However it very well could be usb port issue.

What are you using to inject the payload ? Had a similar problem and couldn't for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong . I was using TegraRCMgui because i had used it initially but i got notta . Since i litterally couldn't think of anything else i tried a different payload injector TegraRCMsmash and it worked the moment i did . Might be your issue as well . Good luck .
