"A copy of DS title Animal Crossing Wild World sent out to media yesterday by Nintendo came loaded with most of the game's secrets unlocked, it also included a nasty surprise.

When you come upon Baabara, the town's resident sheep, you're greeted with a racial epithet. The word is used repeatedly in your conversation with the sheep.

"I almost forgot about you, N—-a" "So got any juicy gossip for me, N—-a?" "Just thinking about it gets me all excited, N—-a."

The word, written with a tilda over the N and an accent over the A, apparently popped up in the game because the person who was playing it, most likely a Nintendo employee, customized the greeting of the critter to include the word. One of the draw's of the original DS title was that the text speech of the game's inhabitants can be customized.

The sheep was first discovered by MTV's Stephen Totilo, who reported on it over on Multiplayer. I was able to track the sheep down on the version sent me by Nintendo and verified that she's just as mouthy in my version.

It appears that Nintendo copied the save for the game to multiple copies of Wild Word and then sent it out to game writers. The copy came with a letter explaining that content had been unlocked so writers could check out how moving stuff from the DS Animal Crossing title to the recently released Wii version worked.

We've contacted Nintendo for comment and will update when they reply."

EDIT: Nintendo's response is below...

"Previously played copies of the 2005 DS game Animal Crossing: Wild World were sent to 14 members of the media to demonstrate the ability of players to transfer items to the new Animal Crossing: City Folk for Wii. We regret that an offensive phrase was included without our knowledge via a wireless function that allows user-generated catchphrases to spread virally from one game to the next. This version is limited to 14 copies created for media review purposes only and is not available at retailers. We sincerely apologize for the incident and are working with media who received the game cards to return them to Nintendo immediately."

Uh, its offensive either way. It's the same exact word. The only difference is that when it ends in "a", it's the slang equivalent of the word. It's still the same racist, demeaning word.

This is BS.

Can't you program your neighbors to say different greetings and catchphrases?

Sounds like another moronic idiot trying to get Nintendo in trouble.

The difference is that by using the tilde N and the accent A is that they bypass the offensive language filter. It's still offensive but to put the blame on Nintendo is just silly. I mean, this is the company that removed "spastic" from a reference to a train. They try to be as P.C. as possible but in games with user generated content this is always possible. Even the title of this thread is over the top. "Lighten up, Francis."

Sounds like that moronic idiot is gonna succeed.

I can see it now, my lawyer Uncle would/will have a field day with this! My parents too for that matter. This is gonna be a real problem for them at Nintendo if they dont keep a keener eye on what their moronic idiots are doing.

The only offensive part is that they keep saying "the N word" or replacing the n**** with n---a.

What are we, 5 year olds?

They don't blur out other cuss words like "shit" or "ass" so why this one?

Are we so afraid of being racists that we can't act like normal adults?

ummm no but its an INCREDIBLY RACIST WORD! and IS VERY offensive! ....believe it or not!!!

remember this is primarily a child's game and children copy/emulate games it could cause a whole heap of trouble for the BIG 'N' and BAD PUBLICITY is never good for sales!

YES we or some of us are ADULTS and can ignore this stuff ... but .... its still a MAJOR issue that runs pretty deep!

if you were to shout it out in a street where a lot of dark skinned people live ...

THERE'S NO DOUBT YOU WOULD BE LYNCHED!!

It would be more accurate to say you would be shot and robbed than lynched. I'm under the impression that only crazy racist white mobs lynch.

And yes, fear of being accused of racism is a big deal in many parts of the country because of political correctness. There's a feeling that if you think it would offend someone else, then it should offend you too. But honestly, over-the-top political correctness is better than real intense racism.

Anyway, it's ridiculous cause no one could possibly think that Nintendo as a company would actually program their animals to say that. They should've realized that it just spread through the catchphrase function in the game.

The word n**** should not be considerd offensive , the fact that this conversation is be held here should though. Let us assume for the moment that the word n**** is offensive , why isn't the black community up in arms everytime the word is said on black radio , tv , ect. If your gonna give some people a pass all people deserve a pass , after all is that what equality is all about ? Seriously if your offended by that word , you need to take up issue with the black community and not any other. After all when was the last time you heard a white person say what's up cracka ?
