Patents are wonderful things, it's patent trolls that are stupid. Patents are very valuable to small-time inventors that are prone to getting their ideas stolen by bigger companies that they work for

There are huge issues with the patent system (though other than software patents I am not sure to what extent Japan's system is in need of work) the concept itself is pretty sound -- nobody invents anything if one week after you release a version out there into the world then some arsehole like myself has pulled it apart, figured out how it was made, figured out how it works and has then made a copy that undercuts your product as I did not need to put the millions (or more) you poured into the 50 different failed prototypes, possibly the research into the chemicals that made it up, the adapting it to meet regs and possibly all the money you spent marketing it as well.

Ideas can't be stolen. Patents and copyright laws are clear violations of freedom of speech; they essentially tell someone what they can and can't do with their own property, which is also a violation of property rights.

Please see my above post. Also check out https://mises.org/library/case-against-ip-concise-guide if you're interested in what I'm arguing.

Another point I'd like to make, if patent laws were repealed. life saving drugs like chemotherapy treatment and AIDs medicine would be as inexpensive as aspirin. It's only artificial government monopolies that increases their cost tens of thousands of times higher than they should be.

Sure they can. Imagine you spend 10 years of your life developing some revolutionary, and you just finish it when someone hacks you and steals all of your concept art and pitches it to a marketing firm. They get rich without doing any of the work, and you're penniless and watching your passion be sold under the name of someone who's only in it for the money

That's a whole 'nother issue in itself. That's not a patent issue, it's a "Big pharma is a dick and healthcare could be better" issue

    This is for you: [IMG]

Big pharma is allowed to be a dick (aka charging whatever they like) because of government patents (artificial monopoly, keeping competitors out at the point of a gun).

I was of the same opinion as you 6 months ago. After being exposed to new information, I've come to the realization of the invalidity of copyright and patent laws. I urge you to read https://mises.org/library/case-against-ip-concise-guide

Well this is a new path I had not necessarily expected. This looks like it is going to be a hilarious read so I might have to settle in for this one.

    "Property in Bodies"
Sounds like these people need to read some better sci fi if garden of eden is their ideal -- plenty of stuff has full memory at time of death clones as an option, they would not even have to go too much beyond the Atlas Shrugged (1957) stuff and look at things like Dune (1965) for an example (thought I suppose technically the gholas did not appear properly until 1969 in Dune Messiah) and Riverworld (1971) for an entire series almost predicated upon the concept. However this is way off topic and it is not like it is terribly relevant here as we are not in superabundance.

Even assuming what is says is correct* then we would have to start from the standpoint that freedom of speech, property rights and I guess individual rights are higher ideals than things that intellectual property law might theoretically protect. For what it is worth those that would try to tell me businesses be people too, son are likely to get a very hostile response but I can at least see some scope here for patents and IP in general to do things.

*even if a semantic agreement could be reached then we still have the issue that the courts very much recognise the concepts and apply the law accordingly. A semantic agreement is not going to happen here though as the underlying philosophy/logic espoused there is not one that I or seemingly the governments, businesses, power players.... of the world share.

Back on topic (again) they seem to like the term "scarce resources" and I am not sure how else to classify human time and resources that theoretically are used to push forward the state of technology.

"they essentially tell someone what they can and can't do with their own property"
Other than some of the things in the weapons, drugs and explosives type world (and even then it is contentious) world then if I can knock it out in my workshop then I can have it. The US approach to genetics (which also forms a lot of the basis for software patents or vice versa) is also highly suspect but that is not enough to write off a concept for me, causes me to seriously consider writing off the US for a lot of things that but that is a different matter. Whether I can sell said workshop product to someone else or the general public is a different matter, likewise whether I can use it as a service could also be part of it (though this might be more the business methods side of things).

I dont see what your problem is. People call the Xbox One Xbone too. People can call Ninty what they want, and you certainly can't force them not to. Be a Smartass somewhere else please.

That makes no sense. I dont say anything against your opinion but you complain about MY opinion. And you said it twice, if you do it one time its okay, but not multiple times.

Well further to this ninty discussion I went and searched usenet archives as well
    Endless examples from many groups

    Earliest the google groups had
    1998 Usenet rec.games.video.nintendo 1998/10/30
    https://groups.google.com/forum/#!s...games.video.nintendo/nyXVQWqTLZA/r7UcYDM6ZCwJ

    And the really crazy one
    4 Jan 93 in misc.invest
    https://groups.google.com/forum/#!s...elevance/misc.invest/T1FJomY_m1c/Vx6ehcmbgiIJ
"Nintendo is traded as an ADR here in America the symbol is NINTY."
For the curious about what an ADR is http://www.investinganswers.com/fin...ck-market/american-depositary-receipt-adr-843
And as I was thinking about that online identity thread I thought I would see if I could find what one Mr Richard A Kelly that was at Lehman Brothers in 1993 and I got back http://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/person.asp?personId=626901&privcapId=264197

So now I think we might have gone beyond slang and now having it as a stock term. If in doubt we are all 90's stock traders now.

You can feel however you wish to feel, however correcting people is no longer trying to stop a local meme/slang term from forming but heading right into obnxious territory is the term is widespread, well established and not likely to trouble anybody -- "I am going to play my 64 this evening" could well mean Commodore 64 or Nintendo 64 but Ninty is fairly obvious, unless you are worried about skim reading ninety nine nights fans I guess.

I just call it my N64 and never heard any people here in Europe call it Ninty, maybe it's a thing from the states but never heard it in the past here. Ninty is something i usually hear kids call it here but not a single adult i know calls it that in Europe. Atleast not in my area.
