If anyone remembers about a year ago, I made a thread about demos on switch and how much is sucks. It's right here for the record. But now this is a new time and I just want to say, it still sucks.
This time, the crosshairs are set to target Nintendo directly. I'm going to be a bit more detailed about this than I was before. If you have a switch, you know what I mean. As you can see above, Mario Tennis Aces is coming out soon, but nintendo decided to have a pre launch online tournament. Well that sounds good and all but why? To give people a chance to try the game before buying it right? Well that's nice, but one problem, why does it have to be ONLINE!?
Just like they did with Arms, and splatoon 2, it's just upsets me they continue to do this. Some people may be okay with this, sure it's better than the pokken tournament DX 15 play limit but it's still a problem. Why can't they release a demo like most developers do. Blazblue Cross Tag battle had a demo, they allowed people to play the game online as a network test, you know what happens when it ends? You can keep playing offline mode if you want. No it's not the full game but it feels like a demo since it does have restrictions and you can do enough to determine if you wanna buy the full game or not at your own pace and not tied to a time limit. Dragon Quest Builders is the same way, limiting to one portion of the entire game but has a area for you to play around in and save the game so you can use if you decided to buy the actual game.
Most of the reason to restrict players to online mode only during a unreleased game is to provide network testing feedback to help improve it during the final game while is still in development phase. It's also obvious if the "Demo" is a network test or just a sample of what to come. Arms had online "Testpunch" if you not familiar, allow people to try the game but you can only play online at a schedule. Eventually they did make a common demo, only problem is the only playable game mode was tutorial. Like I said, it doesn't bother some people since it did last like a entire weekend, but some people may not feel it's enough, not only that, is on a schedule so if yours isn't free for the event, you just get left out, doesn't matter if it's a online one like mario tennis or those in-store kiosk setups, no one wants to be left out. I get the purpose of a demo, but we had some good ones in the past.
Most people would disagree, because of the type of game you are buying is intended to be competitive multiplayer, you would expect online as the main selling point, maybe even go as far as saying "why buy a game like this if you aren't gonna play online?" Not everyone likes online, they don't want to be hooked up to a network 24/7 and not all games need to prioritize this function. Is nice that it exist for people who care to play but the content the game provides without online networking is important too. Just look at super smash bros for example.
Arms lack content, there I said it. Is it fair to say that, well compared to other nintendo games, yes it is even though the game is a new type of game they made. Splatoon 2 improved the content the game has significantly from the previous one, the problem isn't the game is bad, it has good concept just not enough content, and when you lack it, you stuck doing the same thing over and over and it gets monotonous which isn't always fun.
Nintendo continues to have severe limitations on their content that seems to get a lot of bad reputation from it. I'm not speaking as if I expect anything done about it or as a fan, but just genuine concern about the direction they are headed with their consumers. It's making me think Mintendo are making mutiplayer games that focus too much online and won't produce enough content for a casual player to enjoy like smash bros has. I wonder how they plan to do that if they won't even allow simple stuff like in game voice chat and match making with the system itself like Playstaion Network & Xbox Live. It's ridiculous. Think I'll just stop now cause this post is going too long.
Nintendo, I hope you know what you are doing.
