Found this on the Nintendo main website:
MP3's = Major Win. I'm an avid user of the Sound Channel and am tired of getting songs, waiting for my iTunes to load, adding the MP3s to the library, waiting for them to convert, and then putting them on the SD Card; it's a major waste especially if you have a bunch of songs you want to put on your DSi.
Even more, the 3DS seems to add new features with some type of compatibility tester, new animations to the top screen, and apparently a utilization of the Street Pass feature most likely used in tandem with the compatibility feature to see which songs you and whoever else happens to walk by have in common. It does, however, look somewhat similar to the DSi version, but with a pretty 3DS coat.

Honestly, I don't know why they didn't add mp3 support to begin with...

I doubt this will ever happen (it may for NGP), but it would be awesome to have custom sound for games.

    Lol.

You know, it's funny. Nintendo knows what we want and intentionally ignores it and only add it when they feel like it. In fact, Shigeru Miyamoto does the same thing because he actually announced it (minus the last part) (the quote can be found in issue 200 of Gameinformer). The difference is, Shigeru Miyamoto does it really well, Nintendo does it when at least 75% of their fans are pissed off by it (Example: The lack of a translated Mother 3, though I mostly blame the head of NoA for that, he pisses me off on billions of levels [IMG] [IMG] ).

GIF did that in the 90's and the internet stopped using it.
I don't think GIF charges anymore.

I'm really happy that they finally supported MP3 formats.Having to search for converters and converting music was really a bother.I also hope they added some new features in Sound.

Well my preferred converter for the DSi Sound Channel specifically, but now I won't need to use it [IMG].

Probably an impulsive move on my part, but honestly, I think that more people need to know about it, despite it just being the sound channel.

So what ? You're saying Nintendo can't afford paying the MP3 royalties ? Especially that they are a big company, they are in position to get special bargain prices from the Fraunhofer Institute or whoever possesses the MP3 license. Nowadays every simple 30$ mobile phone plays MP3s...

Going back to the subject, I hope 3DS can finally generate decent 44 kHz 16-bit sound. DS had only 33 kHz - you could really tell when listening to Elite Beat Agents songs using quality headphones... yuck.

Meaning they didn't feel like paying the royalties because their profit margins would be that much higher without that added cost tacked onto every Wii sale. I recall hearing the Wii could play MP3s until ninty put out a firmware removing the capability. They removed it because they decided to stop paying royalties. It would not surprise me if Ninty did the same with 3DS, although I imagine the outrage would be bigger for a portable like the 3DS.
