Video player, saves you those, music player, saved you iCrap, and you got your fave PS2 games on the go which was the point. DS experimented at a lower price point, but did NOT give you Gamecube level titles for the most most part (or even when it sorta did, it was no PS2).
I loved the PSP, but it is not me who decides who dominated... I mean, I could try to convince the whole world that the Dreamcast dominated its generations which gems such as Grandia 2, but that is only my feelings, that is not reality.

Nintendo DS vs. PlayStation Portable sales

FeatureNintendo DSPlayStation Portable (PSP)
Units SoldOver
154 million
Over
80 million
Sales PerformanceSignificantly outsold the PSP in most regionsAchieved strong sales, but fell far behind the DS
Target AudienceAppealed to a broader, more casual gaming marketFocused more on a hardcore gaming audience and multimedia
Game LibraryFeatured a larger library, with many kid-friendly and multiplayer titlesHad a strong library of high-fidelity games, including many third-party titles

PS: yeah, I just used dumb AI to make a point, can't waste my time on this.

Price point, and Pokemon vs no Pokemon, to this day. Nintenderp knew and always nailed their demographic right up until now. Why do you think they allowed piracy to run rampart for so, so, so long? They knew that Pokemon will make em million off of parental pockets, but that by no means make that a superior game over GTA3, AvP2, Ultima Online, nor Jedi Knight 2 as a game itself.

Is Kinder Surprise a better product than the Toyota Corolla used to get those things in droves?

Yes, that's correct. And that's probably the reason the DS dominated sales in that era and consequent relevancy in later generations, avoiding Nintendo's portable business to cease existing... the sad reality.

But it doesn't make it the better game system of the time. Literally all PS2-level games that were ported to the DS were absolute phone-level, even almost at the time, trash. Nintenderp only ever cared to polish first party things and make them awkward to the current control gimmicks and so on.

I owned both and when it came to actual game time, DS almost always had a thiccc layer of dust until I learned about flashcarts and ways to help Animal Crossing peeps and miscellaneous games over the PSP where my majority of looking through emulation came through.

Not at all, the one that dominates is NOT the better game system, the one that dominates is the one that gets the marketing, production and conditions right to sell and make money.

PS2 was by far not the best system of that era, but it played DVDs and it had good marketing and games.
The Dreamcast that came first was way easier to program for, the GameCube was both easier to program for and more powerful, and the Xbox (even though it was a disguised PC) was the most powerful of that generation... and even so the PS2 dominated.

I really liked the PSP (and I miss my PSP that unfortunately I lent to a friend back in the day to never see it returned afterwards), I really liked it... but it was not really a success, and less of a success was the PS Vita, and this one was also an interesting device, but Sony somehow fucked it up to make it not sell... And again, I am not talking about which system I think it is better, but about which one dominated the landscape (the fact).

PSP was the golden era indeed. I started fully dipping into all the emulation on mine. Vita will be a forever shame of how it went down despite being arguably the best handheld in terms of features and prowess.

What hurts me the most is the inevitable death of the physical format.
Once "digital", which is still physical format, becomes absolutely bulletproof somehow, we'll still have it. I'll take a custom-painted, read-only 128gb SD card in a box for a game as a physical over a DL DVD any day of the week. You gotta remember that most if not ALL past physical media became a means of DRM as soon as possible past just being a means of distribution. In all honesty, if you want a physical memorabilia get official merch.

Console generations are more or less obsolete now with severely diminishing returns. The only exception being Nintendo because Switch was like two generations behind. So yeah, just get a PC and don't worry about it, most remasters/re-releases can safely be ignored in favor of modding the original game, and you get better discounts on everything else.

After the demise of PC BigBoxes, I stopped buying games on that platform.

Paying for access to a download seems absurd to me. What's the difference between clicking the download button on Steam and Mega? None. So I prefer piracy.

My Steam account is over 10 years old, but it only has games that were free for a while.

I'm more into local multiplayer, sitting with friends and family in front of a big TV and enjoying the moment. I know there are games like that on PC, but they're not the majority.

Multiplayer. Good MP was about the only factor driving sales ever since DRM wars really began in late 90s with some devs and publishers. Hell, I'd test run games on modded 360 and if I knew I would invest time online, I'd get the PS3 copy back in that era.
