As much as I hate Xbox, I don't want Sony to have a monopoly on consoles - but it seems like that's going to be how things are going forward because Microsoft wants to squeeze its customers for every penny they have.

And no, the Switch 2 doesn't really count as competition because it complements the PS5 rather than compete with it and the market is somewhat different [living room box vs. handheld].

Prices are definitely going to increase, for consoles and for games, and there probably won't be a PS Hits line either for budget-minded gamers.

Microsoft is the most evil company on earth and I will always celebrate any L that they take, but you are certainly right to be worried that their lacking relevance in console competition could ruin Playstation. Not that Xbox was much competition to begin with though, if anything I think they influenced Sony in the wrong direction.

It is important that if this happens, more home computers move away from Windows because otherwise this is going to be a net negative regardless of how this affects conversion rates to PC. Xbox's whole reason for existing was to make sure Microsoft kept the market dominance it's always so desperately after and now that market dominance is the reason they stopped caring about it, same with IE 4, Games for Windows Live...

AAA gaming is dead. EA and Activision bought up nearly all the game studios in the USA, and while Microsoft has no idea what to do with Activision besides milk Call of Duty, now EA is being bought by Saudi Arabia and Jared Kushner owned private equity. As private equity does, they are going to make EA responsible for the debt and are planning mass layoffs, higher prices, and to cut costs. They aren't even hiding it ( https://sherwood.news/culture/eas-u...-ripple-across-the-gaming-industry-and-cause/ ) since the FTC is going to rubber stamp it no matter what since Trump's family is involved.

Consoles don't get cheaper as they age now, but instead get more expensive. The PS5 Pro is already too expensive and the PS6 is going to cost even more. AAA games are how they justify the price since you don't generally need 8k 240fps for indie games. Unless Sony launches it with some major exclusives I don't think people are going to line up for a $1000+ console. Especially as food, rent, electricity, and all other consumer goods skyrocket in price.

Gaming as a whole isn't going to die though. We do all have phones, and there is plenty of indie and older stuff available on Steam. Plus Nintendo; assuming that they still put focus into making good games while they price gauge us for them.

Nintendo platforms don't even get a lot of big games, which is why Sony's monopoly is more concerning. That said, next gen is definitely going to be $$$ consoles and no game discounts.

i'm all in favor of sony and just having one console if it gets rid of both mic and nintAPPLE! just needing to buy one beefy console that can handle all of todays games and have all the games available for it and not having to spend fucking $2-3K on a new video card each time for PC. how can you NOT WANT this?! bring on the monopoly i say!

As if the current one doesn't already.
Maybe, if GBAtemp is your only source of [biased] information :P

Monopoly = bad for the consumer, idk what else to tell you.
If Microsoft stop making consoles, they should instead sponsor Sega to start making them again.

Just think what a modern-tech version of blast processing would be able to achieve!
Genesis is still the most powerful console B-)

Do you wish to have a repeat of video game crash of 1983?
If it means we get a soft reset to end some of these bullshit practices, I'm all for it. Let the indie games prevail to fill in the cracks while the "big boys" get their shit together and try again.

Honestly, I would be relieved if they stop making hardware. It's getting too costly both in terms of physical space and currency to have access to all the platforms. In my version of an ideal gaming world everything would be on PC and consoles would just be out-of-the-box PCs that are easy to use for those that prefer console experience.

I'm already considering never buying a Switch 2 after owning every Nintendo console and handheld ever made. $450 is ridiculous and I've had enough Zelda and Mario to fill 10 lifetimes.

I could see myself not buying a PS6 either I may be done.

On the other hand, I did just buy Ghost of Yotel for PS5 yesterday. First game I've bought this entire year. I may also buy Ninja Gaiden 4 if the reviews are good, and then early next year for me there's Resident Evil 9 and GTA 6 in May.

After the $350 price of the OLED model for the OG Switch line, I fully expected another $50 jump to $400 flat for the Switch 2 system, but they gouged everyone an extra $50 on top of the $50 I already expected. A full $100 USD over the baseline OLED model. That was disrespectful af. Then they nickel and dime all the accessories and games too, and there you have it; Pure corporate greed, at it's finest.

Next generation can be called the "Remastered Gen 1.0".

At least for Sunny of a Beach, that don't have fresh ideas an keep copying from their competitors that are doing things better than them in terms of creativity.

STDBox can't even be included as they haven't innovated at all in any field. Their PC disguised as a console don't have games worth remembering.

Most games will be re-re-re-re-re-leased with super-duper-high-end-graphics, on super-duper-high-end-overpriced-consoles, sadly that's the "trend", and Sunny of a Beach (PS5 "pro" heat generator) and Nintendo (Switch 2), have taken the first step on that way.

Tell me how the heck PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are good consoles compared to the past.

I honestly much prefer using a PS4 Pro and playing PS4 games, the current gen is just so uninteresting to me.

Nintendo did get me to buy a Switch game... Mario Galaxy Collection, but I used a discount code (£40 or +/- $53).

Still haven't played as I'm working and after I'm just too damn tired to play games.

Every generation and even every year in gaming has major disappointments and surprise successes. Gaming may crash again but it has become too culturally ingrained to not rise again. I don't really care if there's another gaming crash, I ready have a gaming backlog long enough to last a lifetime.

It competes with it...at least the non-Lite Switch units do. If you were working for Sony you'd definitely consider Switch as competition, because the money that goes to that platform means less that is being spent on yours.

Sony has a planned Vita successor in the works, so that should be interesting. Probably have to sell an organ to buy it, but we can expect that now.

Personally, I find that if Switch 2 compliments the best with anything, it's PC. Just about anything you find on Sony's or MS's consoles can be found there, including games from those companies. Nintendo is really the only one of the 3 console makers that gives folks a big enough reason to buy their platform.

With that said, I'm not much for desktop PC gaming. I shifted to gaming laptops years ago, simply because I just love the portability factor (or simply being able to move it around with ease and take it with me, like on trips). I don't mind if I'm not getting the greatest amount of power by doing that. Most of the time, that excess in power is really only used for effects and too high of resolutions that can be dropped to lower levels and still be more than acceptable. I am interested in that supposed Nvidia N1 laptop, but the chips of that and the N1X keep getting delayed.

Sony's supposed handheld is being marketed as a PS6 portable, able to play those games at the reduced specs, which honestly, benefits Switch 2. Likely digital-only, releasing a few years after Switch 2, and probably not a big enough jump over Switch 2 in overall capabilities where a little bit of downgrading (already from the PS6 home console) would allow Switch 2 to get those same games.
