ROM Hack New to translating roms... so

i've been in romhacking.net... but i read all 3 sites for text editing, but they were like basic stuff...

but like in text editing for nes games and that stuff, it is in american, so i thought it would be easy-

and i don't like to download roms illegally- it is just not right- how we are paying but they just get it for free-

but i have some stuff that my friend gave me such as super mario but i have no rpgs so i don't know anything about how menus will be...

and TOI is in japanese but relative search won't work with japanese for me ....

ah i don't know... i just think i would want to start with hard things, because that is how i did all my works all the time-

i would just start with something hard and ask so much questions until i figure out how to do it-

so because i'm a beginner and i have to be able to do something myself, do you think guess and check would be something for me to do????
i'll do that for style and stats and something else, and see where the menu is or something- but that will be very frustrating because the intro takes forever, and you have to get out of town to first be able to open the menu OTL

You stated it takes 10 minutes to get into the menu and you implied you do that each time you test the rom so i suggested saving

really I will say it again, you'll fail if you don't build up some skills first.
Are you always this negative or is it that time of the month?

It looks to me like he is making some progress from his other thread(s), and AFAIC there is no better way for him to "build up his skills" other than actually trying to do a translation of something, which he is doing right now. I'd even go so far as to hazard that he is translating ToI because he actually wants to be able to play the game and understand the storyline, which to me, would indicate that he's more likely to go as far as he possibly can with his translation effort.

@psycoblaster
Good luck with the translation, and don't let some people drag you down unless you really get in too far above your head...

No offense for psycoblaster about what I'm saying here.

I'm not that negative, if you read a bit the other posts, you'll see that the one having found the location of the menu is Normatt and the only thing he has done is editing where Normatt has pointed him. Even to do so he needed someone to point him to ressources about sjis encoding.
But right now, he can translate almost any text in the game because everything is, as Normatt said, in the arm9 binary.
For example look, all of this directly editable in sjis... :
Code:
EquipMenu
????y]sis?menu/wpnicon.arcmenu/amricon.arcmenu/acsicon.arc????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????…???????????????????????????????????????%s????%s????%s????????????????????????????????????????????%s?????????%s????????????????????%s?????%s?????????????????????????????????????????%s?????%s???????????%s?????%s?????%s?????????????????%s??????%s??????%s??????%s??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????%s??????%s??????????????????????????????????????????????%s???????????????????????????????????????%s???????%s???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

But as soon as he'll want to edit another thing he will be confronted to a big wall. And to go further he'll have to spend a lot of time.

I might perhaps correct myself :

Sorry deufeufeu, I just saw that comment after reading his other thread thathe randomly spammed and still thought it to be a little on the harsh side. He IS trying, and hopefully even if he doesn't complete his self appointed task he will have learned something. The lack of programming skill likely indicates that his other technical related skills are likely at a beginner level, which will likely hold him back the most until he settles down and looks at things.

Anyways psycoblast, again good luck, and take some time to really look at what people are telling you and try to understand it. Keep all your posts and updates in a single thread, unless you really and truly have something worthy of a new thread. Tons of random minor threads in a forum like this particular sub-board are just annoying, e.g. look at the number of pages in some of the older projects. I'd look at ToI as I'd be interested in a translation of that, but I have nearly zero knowledge of Japanese(and no inclination to change that), and also, have not really looked into ROM hacking at all, although I'm pretty certain that from other experience that I have the basic skills necessary, but not as they would have to be applied to this particular type of problem. i.e. I have plenty(too many) of other hobbies ATM, and frankly, if I were to pick another it'd be more along the lines of new homebrew apps or dslinux related.
