Here is my estimation,

No new updates with the release of SMG2 but just a new copy protection.

Afterwards though serious examination awaits the noobs who just happen to update their console.

There's a lot of wii piracy because theres a huge percentage of wii games that are crap and are not worth the money.
That's a cop out. A lot of people pirate the good games too. Also, seriously...the Playstation was popular, and it had tons of crap. It's not really the fault of the Wii so much as developers looking for quick money. At any rate, this isn't really the place for a debate over it I suppose.

I agree with you. I think that a new update would have been seen by now if it was on SMG2. At least, it would be the first time (I think) that an update has come on a disc first.

I said in another thread how I think that 4.3 or 5.0 will be on it's way soon. It's been ages since 4.2 and that did absolutely nothing for the average Wii owner. In fact I can imagine a conversation between an elderly Wii owning couple at the time:

Wilfred: There's a new Wii update Vera. It's just downloaded now.
Vera: Ooh. Has it changed anything?
Wilfred: I think the picture is a bit clearer, although that could be my new glasses. Can't say I've noticed that little thing for those LSD cards in the bottom left before though.

Back to the topic at hand, I would imagine that whatever update is issued that it actually does something added onto the anti-piracy measures. And from the other thread, here are my thoughts on what 4.3 and 5.0 will contain:
QUOTE said:
4.3 - new IOS(es) for Vitality Sensor, homebrew removal, general bug fixes

5.0 - new IOS(es) for Vitality Sensor + any as-of-yet unannounced peripherals (Wii MotionPlus ExtraSensitive), mass homebrew removal, bug fixes, Mii Channel update for customisation, USB Menu, partial abolition of Friend Codes and introduction of global Nintendo IDs.

I think they have given up on the wii ... what did motion+ bring ? not much ... you think this vitality sensor will ?
4.2 was a screw-up and still cracked in 1 day. the big N is probably already too bussy making sure they will have an uncrackable console in the future.
They lost the battle for the Wii already and do they rly care ? I think not!
If it wasn't for the Wii being this easy to mod, they would never have sold this many consoles worldwide

I am seriously disappointed with the lack of games supporting Motion+. Hopefully Zelda Wii will change all tha--
--OH, this isn't the place for that.

Ontopic: Ninty must be spending a bit of time on the inevitable next piracy update. After all, after the disastrous 4.2, they've probably learned to careful their steps.

Did you see how many games are coming out this year from them? Why would you think they've given up on the Wii?

I guess that this HackMii post has been forgotten then..
Ninty has these functions coded in their check disk ! They can easily implement them into a future sysmenu !
The next system menu update would probably make use of the check disk functions to find and delete all fakesigned titles. (Except if these are patched IOSes installed in the regular slots, or a patched MIOS/BC/sysmenu, then it would probably do a visible update automatically to replace said IOSes/MIOS/BC/sysmenu)

I predict the worst.

Well motives are different... writing something to be used in a service center is a lot different than doing this in an update that affects a lot of users. Even in that service center disc it can clearly be seen that the decision to delete trucha signed content is left to the personnel.

And it looks as if they've been ordered to not use it, as seen in the article:

Hackmii article said:
They even have the option of deleting all of this stuff — but it seems that they’ve been told not to do this (remember, they claimed they can’t, and in fact, they didn’t before our friend got his Wii back).

Also, if they implement these checks in future SMs, the actual verification would take place in the IOS, which we already patch to play pirate-ware from SD menu. If the IOS can't tell the difference between a real and fakesigned app, neither can anything that uses the IOS, including the SM.

If they put a separate signature engine directly in the SM (which I don't even think is possible due to how the wii works), it'd be a job for startpatch.

then it would probably do a visible update automatically to replace said IOSes/MIOS/BC/sysmenu)
And if the update was installed via disc and the user has no wifi?

Nice speculation but thats not what caused the spike in sales. Cheaper price, anticipated 1st party software and a wider audience is what made the Wii sell like hotcakes, recall the time when there was a demand for Wii's durin winter time in '07 and '08. Playing pirated games is small factor...

This sounds like a kid wrote this...

They had to, cause last year wasn't very promising Wii wise...
I can't imagine they want to loose a lot of present Wii gamers to move over to other consoles and loose these customers for future Nintendo console releases.

The whole thing with the updates is they only work if people update.

How many of you have a Wii thats not on 4.2?? hell mines is 3.1u

but what I am getting at is if they release and update ,via internet, no one has to download it. WE can just wait till someone has found a way to crack it.
Now if they do an update via disc, i.e. smg2. Then there is a small problem because the disc wont load until the checks for the update is meant. Which means alot of people will update to play the game if they brought it and spend good money on it.

but like any system smart phone, pc , video game ect.. with time there is always a hole.

Unless there's some new check in a future game, the only thing you'll need to do is install the necessary IOS. And that's as simple as running a game in Gecko OS the first time you boot it.

If they do come out w/ 4.3 then they should add an extra 4+ page things on the System Menu or have an update that gives u more Wii System Memory (10,000 or 20,000)!! lol

This is nice.

This is impossible (unless they did some sort of network storage. Knowing Nintendo? No.)

Oh yeah, because it is so possible that a software update will add more hardware flash memory somehow....
think sd or usb

sneek proves it possible

LOL, doublespace or stacker for Wii. Thankfully we have SNEEK instead. Sheesh, I'm getting old.
LOL. doublescpace for wii. That would be the day. How fucking hilarious.

I bet it's possible using dosbox for wii and a specially modified win 9x (i'm not sure which version of win came with double space.)

probably even 3.11 since that one still used a lot of dos stuff

Actually, DoubleSpace and DriveSpace (DOS 6.22's and 7.x's DoubleSpace) do not work on DOSBox. I tried.

They both require a special driver (DBLSPACE.BIN or DRVSPACE.BIN) to work, and there didn't seem to be a way to load those on DOSBOX. I didn't spend much time on it though since it wouldn't be of much use with today's storage capacity.

Dude, +5 points for trying!

QUOTEI bet it's possible using dosbox for wii and a specially modified win 9x (i'm not sure which version of win came with double space.)

In all seriousness you could do this in the IOS if you really wanted to. Basically (de)compress any read/write access to the NAND (or whatever you're redirecting NAND IO to). I imagine SNEEK could do even this on the fly, but I can't imagine why you'd want to, unless you were using it as an intermediary to access the real NAND. USB storage is just too cheap, and I hate to imagine what the performance hit would be.

But it'd be leet

Dude, you kind of... forgot to write something...

ONTOPIC: Sometimes I wonder if the Wii's firmware is incapable of being overhauled in any huge way.
Even the SD Card Menu is just a disguised way of loading a wad into the Wii's onboard memory, which pretty much ruins the whole purpose. So maybe we'll never see any awesome things like that ever again. If that's the case...

...Well, then, way to screw yourself over, Ninty.
