Well I can believe that someone could be mistaken about 7.0.1 vs 8.0.1. Both of them would require an update at least to use online, and you'd have a hard time checking if you updated. Bit harder to be wrong about 8.1 if you connect online.
They seem to range from 7.0.1 to 8.1.0. None of those firmwares will get you anything super special, 8.0.x and 7.0.x might get limited homebrew support in the future though /shrug
Once again I fell down the martial arts rabbit hole and am plumbing the murky depths of the internet's various martial arts and fighting crafts echo chambers.
