I've seen these old pictures of New! Super Mario Bros, where you got 3 power ups and I believe it's co-op there too.
I wondered if there was a place to get this "Old Super Mario Bros" instead of the new one.

Yeah. It is from some time after the DS was revealed. You won't have much luck getting it unless you have access to old betas at Nintendo. If it's any consolation, the game is easy enough to not need 3 item slots.
