New here, doing the required posting

I am new here, but have been using gbatemp for a couple of years now, i just never had to post before. Now I want to directly ask someone a question on a post they made, but apparently I can't do that after registering unless I make five posts. That seems like a way to clog the forum with useless posts like this, but here we are.

For my curiosity, where are you trying to reply that you need five posts? I always thought the five post thing was for direct messages and maybe posting links.

Well the initial registration email said that I would not be able to directly message people but that seems to have been incorrect as I was able to do so and the person replied to me, but I can't view their profile for additional information, so I'm curious if that's a product of the limitations.

That's interesting. To my knowledge you shouldn't be able to DM people out of the box, but maybe that changed.

As for viewing a person's profile, there are individual privacy settings. My profile is set to be public, so you should be able to view it with no issues. Others set theirs to private in a way where you can't see anything, and others set it to a half and half state where people can view but not post or reply on their profile.
