I'm assuming a dead CPU would stop it from beeping even without the ram installed? or perhaps the speaker that came with the case is also broken..

other situation that may prevent the system from posting (personal experience)
1. mobo 12v connector not plugged in
2. bad video card (also, did you connect the auxiliary power on your 6850)
3. defective expansion card (sound, network, video capture, etc)
4. defective hdd
5. defective keyboard
6. the panel holding the mobo is bent or deformed in such way that is invisible to the eye but enough to short the mobo

ASRock and Biostar are complete garbage. Gigabyte is subpar, especially for the price and recently I've noticed XFX uses substandard components. My best experiences have been with MSI, they make solid boards with road worthy components. I have had a DFI board which wasn't too bad and I don't have any personal experience with ASUS mobos but if they're anything like ASUS' midrange laptop models I'd steer clear.

5. defective keyboard

My asrock will not go past post with a USB keyboard plugged in. I bought a Nippon choc mechanical kb and just wouldn't do it. I had to buy a USB to old school ps/2 adapter. It will show the bios screen and then hang. Maybe that's something?
