Hacking new black wii

i am not sure if i am right on this one but hope some one can clear this up for me am i right in saying the new black wiis are unable to read dvd-r disks so you can not plat backups on them but you can still install home-brew and run your wii backs up using a usbloader and external hard drive thanks in advance
