Hacking New and Old R4

hey guys my friend just bought a R4 two weeks ago and its a grey one. i got my R4 in late january/early february and its a white one.

since i got a black ds and hes got a white ds we thinking of trading our R4s to better match our DSs but whats the difference between the older and newer R4s coz i dont wna swap just for the looks i want the best also!

The only difference between the two R4's themselves that you've both got are most likely just the ability to easily modify it for chinese/english firmware. Which in your case, looks like it'd be pointless and wouldn't matter. So short answer, there's no difference between the two if you wanted to swap.

I was going to order a R4 from Winsunx today, are there really a number of different version R4 carts about??

dont worry dude, its just that the older ones can be made so that you can switch between english and chinese, thats teh same one i got

Thats not exactly true, there are 3 generations of R4s...

1st generation R4s
-Could switch from R4 english to R4 chinese to M3 simply english/chinese
-White R4, Came with replacement black shell; Transparent grey microSD reader

2nd generation R4s
-Cant switch to M3
-White R4, transparent grey microSD reader

-Cant switch to M3
-Black R4, transparent grey microSD reader

3rd generation R4s
-Cant switch to M3
-Black R4 silver microSD reader

yours is probably 2nd, and your friends is 3rd. 2nd and 3rd have the same chips just different shell and microSD reader.

actually no big but the first generation ones came with that translucent blue tf reader thing. it literally overheats and melts. I just got myself a multi card reader with a nifty tf slot for like 6usd

but M3 and R4 are like the exact same thing. my usb adapter is like a dark grey transparent squary so i must have second gen, and in that case the second gen and third gen are the exact same?

Nah, what I said applies to what he asked. His question didn't concern the included goodies, just the R4 itself. There are so many inconsistencies with which readers are included with which R4 versions so it's difficult to group them into "generations."

As far as functionality goes, each "generation" of the R4 itself is exactly the same. The only thing changed was the ability to easily do the language modification.

My firend and i swtched between a grey and white R4 and it worked perfect.

ok i traded with my mate today, and 2 things that i noticed... after selecting pokemon diamond the white screen is there for like 1-2 secs longer and it has frozen on me twice now at different places within the past two hours. is it just buggy R4 or what? i never had any problems with that on my white R4, or could it be my DS because i just got a new one today. before i was playing my white R4 or phat DS....
