First off thank you for reading this.
With the 10.3 downgrade I quickly ordered the gold n3ds Zelda edition that I always wanted but as soon as it arrived 10.4 was already out so I crossed my fingers for a good firmware version out the box.

I finally received my n3ds and it came as 9.9 firmware. So my question is can I downgrade from this firmware? If not is there a way to upgrade this device to 10.3?

Any ideas are deeply appreciated, thank you.

You can downgrade. I downgraded both my N3DS XLs, one messed up during downgrade, but recovered since I could still boot Cubic Ninja.

I wouldn't try downgrading without a reliable method of getting back to HBM.
It's a risk, so just know that. I used SafeSysUpdater myself.

So I would need cubic ninja to unbrick my n3ds if something went wrong?

No, you could go into recovery mode and do a system update, but it'd put you on 10.5 and you'd have no chance of downgrading at that point.

If that is the worse case then I can live with it. Any tips on using safesysupdater?

Pray? It's pretty simple to use. Just find the un-linkable-to files from some magic sites. You want the one that says _n3ds.
Extract to sd card. Copy the safesysupdater to 3ds folder. then run. The kernel hack isnt reliable, it may take a few tries. Took me 10 times to get it working on one, then 1 on another, its random.

So I tried to use safesysupdater but the second I try to use the browser in order to start homebrew I get the message that I need a system update to use the browser..

Am I missing something?

Well after 10 or so tries the downgrade ran, then once it rebooted the 3ds goes to the main OS menu. Once I click on settings it shows the nintendo boot logo endlessly never getting into the menu.
If I click the browser it endlessly waits for it to load without any success.
I tried launching one of the built in games and it ran...

Did you install menuhax so you can try again if you don't you may have a partial downgrade in which your fucked and have to update. Unless you buy Cubic Ninja.

If he installed menu hax, he needs to download a new "other payload" I believe, because the one it installed will be for 9.9.

I am in a similar situation with an old-3DS that I have on hand that has firmware version 9.4.0-21J and I would like to downgrade it to 9.2.0. I am usually paranoid about trying any thing with any amount of risk-factor, so I would like to get some answers to a few of the questions that I have before I decide if I should proceed with attempting to downgrade or not..
I have a gateway card already..
And I have cubic ninja game..
And also zelda OoT game..

1: First of all, where is the most reliable guide to doing this (assuming a thorough guide of it exists some where on this site)?..

2: Gateway claims that they are working on a safe way to downgrade.. Would you guess that they would have this ready with in the next 3 months?..

3: I have read about people saying that you only get "one shot" to downgrade.. Is there any way to eliminate or at least mitigate this risk?.. From reading the other posts, it seems that menuhax might be one way to reduce risk in certain situations, but what situations does that protect you from exactly?..

4: If the downgrade goes poorly, and I find my self with (for example) version 10.5+, then I am screwed completely, right? (excluding hardware modification)..

5: I actually have a back-up of the NAND from when it had 4.5.X on it a long time ago.. (Some one stupidly decided to update it to 9.4.0 with out my permission).. Assuming there is still no way to write the NAND back to the old-3DS with out a hardware modification, are there still some people on gbatemp that will modify your 3DS for you if you send it to them?.. (I tried modifying it my self for several days and failed miserably and gave up)..

Honestly, I downgraded 2 Old 3DS with no issues at all. As long as you have CN, you should be ok since you have an entry point.

A harmod would be your best option if you want to eliminate the risk factor and it won't cost more than 30 bucks.

I have successfully downgraded my old-3DS from 9.4.0-21J to 9.2.0-20J using safesysupdater and cubic-ninja entry-point.. Thanks for your advice guys..

if my console is firm 9.9, is true that is better first upgrade to 10.3 and then downgrade to 9.2? I hear that are more softbricks reported in 9.9 downgrade.
