Gaming New 3DS Browser Info: No Adobe Flash!

Overall I have no remarks about the NetFront browsers I've used (including those with no flash support). So I'm really looking forward to this one.

Actually, I hate it because most sites don't work in it. Hell, not even the official Sony forums work. Not to mention that even gbatemp barely works. Opera on the DSi works on more sites than the PS3 browser. Opera Mini on my feature phone (LG Env3) works even better than any of them except Opera on the Wii.

That's...odd. Both GBATemp and The Official Sony forums work just fine on my PS3. There are actually very few sites I've come across that aren't supported...But either way, those are compatibility and display issues, I'm assuming. With the newest release of the software, I'm sure those problems wouldn't be present, and if they are, it's possible that they'll be patched in a later fix.

That's hoping that the 3DS's hardware architecture isn't like the Wii's sorry stack.

Probably, but the concern seems to be on browsing and how it loads websites, apparently. I've used 4 different devices that use Netfront, and the worst one, the PSP's, loads those sites fine. (GBATemp is clunky, as the browser doesn't scale the site for whatever reason, but it does work.) Seeing as this is the latest version of the browser optimized for the 3DS, I don't think it'll have a problem loading GameFAQS. We can only wait and see, but the browser itself isn't bad. The one on my brothers Droid works just fine.

As for images, the browser can directly display 3D picture data in the MPO format. Compatible image formats include MPG, GIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP and ICO.

I'm still hoping for a dedicated Youtube channel - I think it'd make more sense than the browser supporting flash, especially if it can't be run simultaneously with another app, like the Web Browser. Not disappointed that flash isn't supported, as I didn't think it would be from the first place. It is good to see it's spec sheet though, I suppose.

That would be cool, and the 3DS was actually the first thing that came to mind when Youtube announced 3D content was coming. Could (should) happen.

I am disappointed that both Flash and HTML5 are not supported. Flash was kind of a stretch anyways what with Adobe licensing, but HTML5 is used in a lot of places nowadays.

Maybe they'll add HTML5 later? I hope so. For places like Youtube, I wouldn't mind a separate app as such capabilities would require more resources than what is allocated to the browser. Maybe even when using the browser, if it identifies that you are traveling to a place like Youtube where a separate app is available to run them, it'll warn you about where you are going, and that when accepted, it'll close the browser and launch the necessary app. That would be nice.

Try using the official Sony FORUMS with it. They won't even load, not even with google cache. Even google has quite a few issues with the PS3 browser, and you can forget about yahoo mail (no, you can't use yahoo's mobile site (unless you have a Pandora capable PSP and are willing to decrypt and hex edit a .prx to change the user_agent string), as the ps3/psp browsers are blocked).

I'm disappointed, I bought the 3DS specifically for the web browser and nothing else. I didn't
buy it for the great games. I'm taking my 3DS back with some bricks on side! What wrong with Nintendo?

Seriously tho, I expect the NGP to have one of these.

It would have been cool to be able to watch 3D videos on the browser tho...

Hopefully NetFront won't insist on having the browser limited to 2MB of RAM like it is on the PSP (unless you use the hacked version which runs from the game folder rather than the VSH.

Personally I don't see what the big deal is. If you expected to use the 3DS browser as your primary browser for anything, I wonder about you. If anything, it's a novelty and a nice thing to quickly check guides, gbatemp, etc. Some people in this thread make it sound like the 3DS is now utter crap because of this. If you want a good portable web browser, get a smart phone or a netbook. If you want games on the go get a 3DS/NGP.

It's pretty obvious they just don't want to compete with the hundreds of thousands of free online flash games.
They already said cheap phone games are doing terrible things to value.
There's no way they'd want to go up against free online flash games.
Some of which are more entertaining than proper commercial games these days.

I doubt anyone was truly expecting to use the 3DS browser as their primary surfing interface. But "novelty" was okay last generation. At this point, we should have a fully functional browser, especially if it's a bullet point for the system. I agree in that the omission of certain plug-ins should have been expected, but let's at least hope the thing doesn't surf at a crawl. Again, novelty isn't gonna cut it, nor is it unreasonable to expect more from the device.

Considering the 'main' mobile platform iOS doesn't support flash at all, I'm not sure anyone is really missing flash.

If they provide a youtube app and a Facebook app sometime in the near future, then I won't care if it doesn't have flash.

(I am unsure if facebook works without flash or not, so I may not need a facebook app.

EDIT: Oh snap, you know what would have been awesome? If Gmail Voice worked on the 3DS!. I could then make free phone calls with it.....Don't see that happening though, but would certainly pay to have that functionality.
