Once again we see a flood of people whom probably just go with the flow, like sheep, saying "OMG 3D SHOULD NOT BE DONE ON THE GBA".
Well guess what? 3D was done on the SNES. Anybody Remember Starfox? Stunt Race FX? Excellent games. Excellent 3D games. On the SNES.
Supposedly, the GBA is more powerful than the SNES when it comes to graphics processing. Making 3D games is much more accessible, for one thing: You don't need to liscence the expensive SuperFX technology to make 3D games on the GBA.
What's wrong with trying? I've seen people here badmouth games just because it's trying to do 3D on the GBA, when the game itself actually was pretty good -- take Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride, for instance. All I saw was people complain about how 3D shouldn't be on GBA and this and that, and it was actually a pretty solid game, with a pretty good 3D engine (20-25fps! That's great, for a GBA game doing what it did).
That being said, I think the programmers for this game tried to push the GBA little too far; the detail level may be high for the track, but the framerate really, really suffers. With all 4 racers on screen, we're talking 3-5fps -- and when the game is running at it's best, 5-10fps. Either it's bad programming or they really don't know the limitations of the GBA hardware. I'm wondering if the voxel resolution is just too high (for the 3D maps in this they used voxels instead of polygons) -- Smuggler's Run for the GBA used voxel maps too, but really low-res ones; on the plus side, the game had a terrific framerate (a solid 30fps) for it's 3D terrain.
Track design is a little boring, too. I tried a few different tracks and they all looked exactly alike; and checkpoints are at times, scattered about randomly. Worst of all, the tracks are very hilly so you catch alot of air -- while "cool", it makes it extremely difficult to steer your Quad half the time. Oversteer confuses me as well, there are times when I'll tap left and turn really sharply when I didn't mean to.
In the end, this game looks pretty in screenshots, and it might be better with a little more solid track design and a higher framerate.
