Need suggestions for retro sprites.

Yeah yeah, just Google it, but I don't need direct links (But they would be appreciated), I just want suggestions. I want to design a collage of retro characters and retro'd characters (8-Bit Master Chief for example).

Anyone got any tips? Just suggest your favourite characters that have appeared in gaming across the ages that have 8-Bit sprites.

I can remember someone had an 8-Bit/NES themed signature that was really epic, anyone remember who?

Hmm... sorry to say, but I haven't heard of some of them. What're they from?

EDIT: Haohmaru is Samurai Showdown, Smoke is from Mortal Kombat, and Kenshin I still don't know.

He was also the grey ninja/clone of Scorpion in hiding in the forest in MK2 and was made a playable character in MK3 (not to be confused with Noob Saibot, who is an all black character from MK2).
