I installed the .inf file using ndiswrapper for my NETGAER WN511B wifi card. It says hardware present whenever i plug it in but there are no wifi networks in the pull-down on the top panel. How do i actually start the card so it can pick up my wifi network?

You should probably switch to Ubuntu or Linux Mint. They handle things like this much better. Debian is difficult to use for anyone without lots of low-level Linux experience.

    Try

    modprobe ndiswrapper

    In terminal.

    Usually, you'll do something like:

use iwconfig to configure the wireless card

    then

    ifconfig wlan0 up
