Hacking Need fast answer regarding USB stick!

I have a softmoded Wii U (or the vWii mode). I play games from my external drive and it works flawless (though finding a fiting y-cable was a pain!).

Now I wonder, is it possible to use a USB stick and put games on it instead of my external drive? Or does it have to be an external drive with y-cable?

It works fine on my setup, 32GB usb flash.

USB flash drives work, however Nintendo recomends Self powered HDDs. (the ones where it plugs in the wall)

it works but since a USB drive only has so many writes, it will kill the USB faster, and It may lag a bit in some areas of the game through proven experience. I've also had where the games take longer to boot up and freeze more frequently. HDD is preferred because of these reasons.
