The save is not stored on the console's NAND, but on the Cartridge's NAND.
You don't need to make a console's NAND dump after playing.

If the flashcard teams release a version of their application compatible with ROMs using Card2 type, the save will probably be stored on the 3DS's Big SD card, If you want to backup your save file you only need to copy the .sav located on your big SD card, like with every games.

It could even be saved on the microSD itself (like on real Card2, directly after the game's data), in this case you'll need to extract it using a program like WinImage.

Note: this is only speculation at the moment.
We will see how a Card2 game is saved. You just won't need to dump your NAND each time.

there are two cartridge type:
One with a ROM + limited size EEPROM for saves, and one with NAND (game data and save are located on the same chipset which can be rewritten to store the saves).
They are more expensive to produce, but can store more data for the save file and have faster access speed. it's useful for games with a lot of data to be saved, or streamed, like Animal crossing.

There's a thread where the differences are explained:

It is not that it cost more to produce, Nintendo is paying for the extra features supported by the hardware vendor. Nintendo is getting larger than what is commercially available to others through exclusive contracts with Macronix.

Nice to know!
Thx to all who answered me! :)

Someone asked about Pokemon X/Y. I know the cartridge has a NAND and it's stored there, but what about the eShop version. Is the save still stored in the SD card?

Cheers!

Still SD.
However save verification data is on the NAND

Sorry for so many questions. I'm just trying to be on the safe side. :)

Meaning I still have to, at least, backup once I buy the game?
Since the verification is on the NAND and the actual save in on the SD, if I don't backup the NAND after I bought the Pokemon, the save itself would be useless, right?

So for NAND saved games bought on eShop I have to backup the NAND at least once to have the save verification saved too.

Thanks!

Not only for NAND-saved games but for any game with Anti-savegame restore.

I have a question, still i dont know if it belongs here. I played Pokemon Y on my 3ds and it upated my FW to the latest release. With this being said, will a gateway card work on my 3ds or do i need a non upgraded ds to insert the card and than put on my 3ds? And if not, i see some of you talking about downgrade. Is it possible to downgrade from 6.2 to 4.5?

Your 3ds needs to be on 4.5 max for gateway to work. Sadly no way to downgrade if you havent made a dump backup of your firmware before updating :/

Knox, unless you already have a 4.X dump, so far, there's no way to downgrade. Unfortunately!

To go back to 4.5, you'd need to have a 4.X dump of YOUR 3DS and flash back now, otherwise, you'll need a new 3DS to run Gatweay.

Cheers!

Good one!

I thought the same but I could not test as my Gateway is taking forever to arrive...
You don't need Gateway to use their menu for NAND backuping, you only need some way to launch *.nds file for exploit (old r4i do the trick).

Hmmm! Good to know!
I have a R4i 2013 and a DSTwo... will try that!

PS: I already knew the blue card is a "regular" R4 but I didn't realize the actual "NAND nackup" utility was in the NDS Gateway installer... Thx!

Will try that on my R4i 2013!

Cheers!
