There seems to be a lot of hostility here over some silly little "edutainment" software
As an American who grew up in a tri-lingual (English, Ilocano, Tagalog) family, studied Spanish for 4 years and Japanese for 9 years (with 4 of those years spent in Japan), I have to agree with kikuchiyo that something like this won't help much, but everyone has to start somewhere. I passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (Level 1, the hardest level) a couple of years ago and have finally reached the point where I can read novels in Japanese without having to look in a dictionary every minute or so, but I still remember how I was when I took my first class in elementary Japanese as a freshman in college. I still remember relying on Romaji (ugh) for the first few weeks of the semester and failing my hiragana quiz
When I was a total Japanese language n00b, I probably would've loved to have something like My Japanese Coach.
No one should expect to be able to play Japanese imports, read manga and watch anime in Japanese after playing My Japanese Coach, and I'm pretty sure that most people anticipating this title don't expect it. Such expectations would be unrealistic, and quite frankly, naive. I still have a hard time following some anime, even after being literally immersed in Japanese for several years. To those who do decide to try this game out, I hope it will eventually lead to a more serious pursuit of language acquisition in the future. But in all honesty, you could find loads of resources for learning Japanese for free online right now that are just as good if not better than this game.
Still, I'm somewhat curious about this title and will check it out when it's released, if anything just to assess whether I can recommend it to a Japanese n00b.
BTW the person who transliterated the Snoopy game title should be drawn and quartered.
