But is there a homebrew that allows you to play your own mp3/aac etc files, WHILE playing games? Say, I wanted to listen to some full on metal while playing Avalon Code.

But seriously. Is it even possible to do this?

Not possible, sorry. The DS doesn't have an operating system running in the background, so only one application can be running at once. Once the game loads, the mp3 player would be shut out of memory entirely.

This type of system does has its advantages however. Because there's no OS in the background, games have complete control over all the hardware, which allows them to do more with less CPU power and RAM.

EDIT: Chris, of course some consoles have multitasking. With the PSP for instance, you can play your own music and a commercial game at the same time because there is an OS running in the background. I believe the XBox 360 and PS3 also have operating systems and thus can multitask in theory, possibly the Wii as well but I'm not sure about that.

the only way possible is to re-hack a game and put your music IN IT. I dont think any console is multi-process. Only in PC. I hope Im mistaken, though

Xbox360 can play music from USB slots or straight from HDD. I should expect PS3 can too. This is during gameplay.

You kinda just wrecked my hopes.

.....
But Chris said something about "re-hacking", to put my own music in. Is this a good idea? And is it difficult to do?

Sorry if I wrecked your hopes, but being angry about it isn't going to make it possible.

Hacking in your own music might be possible, but I don't know anything about it. Can't imagine that it would work all that well though, as you'd just be replacing "Forest Stage 1" music with "Eye Of The Tiger" or whatnot, so you wouldn't have any sort of choice about which song to listen to at any given point of the game.

EDIT: verbs are good, ya

sorry for the anger.

But still, replacing music that I dont like from games, with music i could listen to over and over again, would still be an improvement.

You'd have to pretty much re-compose the music so it'll work with the DS's audio hardware. Otherwise it's gonna take a lot of overhead to decode an mp3. Anyway, it's no simple task to put custom audio into a ROM. It's one thing undubbing a ROM with voices that were already in another version of the game in the first place, but quite another to put something entirely different into it.

one simple solution!
turn on ur computer, launch WMP, select a song to play, boot ur ds, turn volume off, play music, play game. DONE!

Well, the answer is no, you can't play your own soundtrack during games, and you most likely never will be able to.

I did said I HOPE IM MISTAKEN as I only have a Gamecube and 3 kinds of NIntendo DS. Thank you for confirming that the PS3, PSP and the 360 can multi-task. I said "I hope Im mistaken"

You need a sound converter to convert an Mp3 to a DS sound file. It's possible but Im not sure how. I just said it's possible to re-hack. I didnt meant it to be true or confirm as I saw some rom hacks with custom sounds.

Even replacing the music in the game it's a pain in the ass.
Take TWEWY as an example. It uses .adx sound format, which works basically as a wav (but is not a wav). There are tools to convert to and from .adx (the dreamcast used the format as well), but you can't put anything you want. If you replace, say, the title screen music with a 10 minute song, it will crash, unless you encode it with a really low bitrate. Also, the music in most games (including TWEWY) isn't really good bitrate-wise, to save space. Also, if the song is smaller than the original, then weird static noises could happen, or nothing at all (it depends).
