I installed vcredist_x86.exe and I believe to have the latest DirectX, yet when I try to run it I get a generic error and it refuses to run

Did you try after rebooting? I downloaded the visual package but still it doesn't find some DLL file.

Can't you just use a 3.5mm male---male cord by plugging one end in your DS and one end in a microphone jack?
