Just wondering why we haven't seen any CFW being able to run games as 3ds files in the same way the GW Red card does.

Is there some technical limitation that prevents the 3DS/CFW from being able to do this?
I am assuming the Red Card emulates a physical cart, and if so why isn't a CFW able to do this with the internal SD card?

A .3ds file is programmed to read/write data on the card, the Gateway red card emulates a real card to solve this problem.
Since we can just use CIA files no developer would want to waste his time on this.

3DS files is image file of cartridge. Gateway Red Card is use to emulate this 3DS file become virtual cartridge.

it just like you need daemon tools (or other Virtual CD apps) to emulate CD ISO Image file.

Well, it's not impossible to emulate 3DS file in CFW, but there's so many thing need to be bypass. therefore CIA is still more convenient at the moment

I guess the trade off is the time to install/uninstall CIA games vs the time to develop 3ds emulation.
Considering it hasn't been done so far, I'm assuming there isn't a simple way to achieve it.

Well no to sound rude or anything, but ninty had this problem too. They saw how they could boost sells by selling digital copies of games, but then the user would lack the cart hardware. After some brainstorming they traded that hardware lack by an installation time. And thus, the CIA/CXI/CCI format was born.

You were already using a digital form of 3ds.

You can thank ninty for reducing installation time by pumping up the 3ds specs with the n3ds, if all.

Didn't come across as rude at all.
So the original idea was to just run the 3ds cart dumps, but without the physical cart to be used as an emulation platform, it was decided that it would just be simpler to take the eshop or digital distribution route and install the files to the NAND?

No, the design was to try running 3ds games from the system without a cart to allow digital sells. They developed the idea and the cia format with its upsides and downsides appeared from there.

The eshop distribution system was developed later.

Basically that's the reason why NDS roms can't be converted to DSi Ware, right? Then again, 3DS files can be converted to CIA. Shouldn't that make it possible to convert NDS roms to DSi Ware, then?

Oh, the cia format was developed to allow eshop digital distribution?
And then since that it is a convenient method of running games, CFW has had no need to do anything else.

I am no expert in DSiware, but afaik DSi != DS. So the titles that can be played are the DSi titles, and NDS carts can be used right away. Since there was no digital distribution on NDS they don't have to support NDS to DSiWare conversion, but then again, I'm no expert in this.

Disable the signature checks to let the system launch installed but unsigned content. The eshop does not use exactly the CIA system, but it's very close. (CXI/CCI)

IIRC, DSi games couldn't be converted to DSi ware cause the game size is too big for normal DSi ware games.
Hence due to some measure in the 3DS, it wouldn't launch.

Or maybe it's a ram issue.

    Somethings like that ;p
