Hey guys, I have some questions about Mplayer CE if anyone can help me out.

My wii is currently on 4.0E using the yafaze ultimate virgin 4.0 softmod. I have only installed USB loader GX and cIOS rev13b, just to get USB working. All of that works fine, however, my wife has now asked me if it is possible for me to make the wii play xvid files. I said I would look into it and here I am

So, question, I don't want DVD playback and don't have DVDx installed, I don't even own a single DVD. What I want to know, is can Mplayer CE stream files from shared drives on my PC or do you have to use a USB2 device like a portable hdd or USB stick. Also, with xvid playback, is the program a viable replacement for say an xbox with XMBC or an xbox 360? The main thing it would be used for would be playing TV eps encoded in xvid format, approx 350 megs an ep.

Last question, unsure about installing it. I have read up on it and stuff but I am confused as to the hazards. I only have cios rev13b installed as ios249, nothing else. Can I install mplayer CE without bricking my wii?

Oh, one last thing, I also have a wiikey version 1 in there if that changes anything, back from the days b4 softmods.

If anyone can help, thanks guys!

mplayer ce will do everything you ask. you dont need to install any other cios (but apparently the usb2 cios 202 will give you better wifi speeds). i use mpayer ce to play media via wifi from my pc and it works great. plays divx no problems at all. it wont play anything 720p so youre out of luck if thats what you want. as far as being a replacement for xbmc, ive never had an xbox, so cant comment, but from what i have seen, its a very viable replacement. it doesnt quite have the spit and polish of xbmc, but give it some more time and a new gui and it will be fantastic (not that it isnt already

Thanks for the reply, one more question

I know you have to use Samba shares to get wifi working. I have no freaking idea how to use Samba. I am a windows only household, no linux, is there any way I can even get Samba shares running on windows or is it just impossible?

Samba is built into Windows. Just create a shared folder on your computer, and enter the details into the smb.conf file.

(To do that, you right click on a folder> properties. Sharing tab. Check Share this folder.)

Looking at the issues page for MPlayer CE, it appears that from v6 and up, it's refusing to connect to Windows XP shares. So you may have to wait for an update if it doesn't work for you.

Here's a page about configuring samba.

Works great! Of course I had to go back and install DVDX (bootmii beta 2 installer) to get it to play DVD video and read DVD data (as I never initially installed it) and that way all there was to it. Watched Karate Kid II from beginning to end (retail DVD) without a single hiccup...and it looked FANTASTIC on my HDTV as well. Played some MP3's burned to a disc as well as some other audio files on the SD. Outstanding work. This app is a must have!

I have 0.7 installed and a USB drive (500GB MyBook) with two partitions (one NTFS for regular stuff, one WBFS for Backup loader), and apparently that's causing a problem for MPlayer to mount the USB drive correctly. Is there a way to fix this?

EDIT: Never mind, apparently it must be in FAT for it to load. I will try that then.

I keep getting a code dump with 0.7 whenever I select "Quit" after loading it from a forwarder. Then it says Stack Dump and something about Reload in 8 seconds. I wait for 8 seconds, and then "reload" appears under the message, but nothing happens. Any ideas?

well your'e obviously using some very off channel, as the app has auto chain detection anyway, so it will either return or restart.

I tried these 2 other forwarders from the wadder downloads page, and it still code dumped on exit.

I found one on their forum that works though.

The V2 download from that page:

Wii MPlayer-ce with ftp modification by hax
--------------------------------------------------

This version of player has possilibity to play files directly from FTP servers.
Also, it has a few SMB improvements.

Background: I have ASUS WL500W router with USB HDD atached. I was not able
to play movies from it, because player was not able to connect to SMB share.
Since router also has FTP server, and there are several good FTPs in
proveder's network, I developed FTP support to player. After picking
throught code, I also fixed SMB support.

Place all files to folder:

\apps\mplayer_ce\

as usual.

Configure ftp.conf for ftp access.
This version of player possibly? does not support
USB 2.0 mode and DVD playing, because I was not able to
compile that parts of code.

If you want to keep two versions of the player, place
all files to:

\apps\mplayer_ftp\

folder, but place ftp.conf to

\apps\mplayer_ce\

Changelist:
--------------------------------------
- FTP playback support;
- SMB now supports "User level share security" (required by WL500W router.
Older versions supported olny "Share level security");
- SMB now supports plaintex passwords (required by WL500W router);
- SMB cache behaviour fixed;
- SMB now supports files larger than 2GB;
- loop-wide.avi changed;

- smblib fix: _smb_read() can read more then 7306 bytes now;

I'd like that you share your sources, then I can add in official project.
If you want to join to the project contact us in irc://irc.efnet.net/mplayer_ce
About - smblib fix: _smb_read() can read more then 7306 bytes now , it's done in that way because the max packet size in nintendo wifi is 7306 bytes, if you send a packet bigger then the packet is spplited and you are loosing speed, the optimal value is 7306, so this is not a fix you are slow down smb speed.
Also what is - SMB cache behaviour fixed ? The SMB cache was fixed by Tantric 1 month ago or more. more bugs?
If you share your changes in SMB then Tantric can add to official svn devkitpro
About file size, last version is using latest devkit (beta) and it's supporting 64bits file, file size is not a libtinysmb limit you can use very big files in samba now
