If your question is not answered in the FAQ, feel free to ask.

Please leave any thoughts/questions/concerns/comments/kudos/insults!!

Thanks for the guide! I followed you 4.1 install, and it worked fine. If I could make a suggestion, as you continue to update put in the FAQs section "If I updated to x.yy from this guide previously, what do I do?" or something of the ilk. Thanks for the straightforward and detailed post, I much appreciate it!

Well I've never had a problem getting a softmod to work in the past, but I can't figure this out. I have 4.2U, and I've followed the 4.2 directions to the letter. I've tried downloading the files multiple times, with no luck. I am stuck on step 10/11.

10) Press left until you see do not reload IOS and choose WAD install.

I do this, and everything installs fine until it gets to installing custom IOS, and gives me a "install error" ret = -1035

11] Start the Homebrew Channel and load up DOP-IOS v8

DOP-IOS will not load, I select it and get a black screen. I have tried downloading it separately from the wiki as well, and still no luck. It will not work.

I have gone through this twice now, with a fresh install from a new download, and both times I've gotten stuck at this step.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm trying to work through the same issue hollyw00d. I'll post any success/failure I may have.......

************EDIT*************

hollyw00d - re-read step 6 - my problem was that I didn't UNINSTALL the IOS's after installing them!!! After that, no -1035 error

Thank you!! I followed the guide, and now my Wii is soft modded again. Once again, thanks!

Anyways, I have 1 question. Before I update my Wii to 4.2, it was an NTSC version, so I used the "Regionfree Changer", to change it to a PAL version.. Am I able to change it back to NTSC using the same method? (but reversing it)

Just wondering why you changed the ios70 part of the guide to installing a wad instead of using dop ios to patch it?

Also since the guide now includes preloader. Is this the new preloader that can correctly find the HBC new id.

Might wanna mention that in the guide otherwise you might get questioned and told that preloader can't boot the hbc.

(notes: started with a virgin 4.2U)

I'm wondering this exact thing. I followed Amarokz Guide and he used DOP-IOS (v8 I think) on 53, 55, and 70. I read somewhere else that DOP-IOS V8 doesn't patch right (something about bug not enabled correctly) and Preloader .29 will not work with that. I'd like to get Preloader installed but I'm unsure what to do at this point.

It seems that having followed Amarokz guide I can just start with your guide at step 12.
Ie, boot up wii, startup HBC, load WAD Manager 1.5 from SD card, and install IOS70-64-v6687 [Patched][FreeTheBug].wad.

Then I can follow steup 13 and install preloader.

Would this be correct?

this worked perfectly!!!!! easy as you can get! the only thing i didnt get (and i am a newbie to wii and wii modding!) was no links to working backup loader/usbloader.
NeoGamma r7
dont use usb so dont know a good usb loader!!!!!!

Thanks for compiling this tut!!!!!!!1 U R the best!

of course its the JODI preloader.
dop-ios cant ES_identify IOS 70 and thats what preloader needs to operate off IOS 70 correctly

So I decided to dust off my Wii since it hasn't been in use for quite some time. I originally used the Twilight hack to get homebrew on it. Its running 3.2U system menu. I used a guide that installed 2 Backup Launchers 0.3g & .01 and a soft chip loader. It has Starfall on it, and some other stuff on it. I have not been in the "scene" for a while now and want all the latest and greatest. What and how should I remove anything installed? I want to someday be able to load all my games on a external hard drive. What External HD is the best and largest to get? Im assuming that I should use this guide to get to where I want to be with my Wii, Im just worried about my current configuration and what if any action I should take b4 following this guide.
check here for usb hard drives
you can just go ahead and the 3.x version of the guide.

Awesome and detail guide but...

I wanna know how bootmii can launch directly another application than bootmii itself ?

It can be usefull for my bricked wii !
its uses a method known as cboot2

So i used this guide yesterday on my 2nd wii i have at my parents house and used the dop ios on ios70.(Because that was what was in the guide)

So now that won't work properly or what?

I don't plan on installing preloader on it but will probably play wii ware/vc from the sd menu.

So do i need to install the ios 70 wad instead now?

OK, thanks, but it doesn't show anything when started as boot2.

Is the any dol that can run from IOS249 cause I think this is the only one I have left in my Wii.

Can someone explain with file is the ppcboot.elf, what is the purpose of startup.elf.

Thanks.

if you dop-ios IOS 70, then you can still play wiiware games off the sd card no problem.

but it needs to have ES_identify enabled to load preloader with IOS 70 properly.

i would install the wad if i was planning on installing preloader

QUOTE(RCGantois @ Oct 4 2009, 08:21 PM) Does this works with a 4.2u Wii updated directly from Nintendo? I have a Wii D2c with Wiikey2

THANKS!!!!
thats what its meant for.
the official 4.2 update via nintendo.

i am following the guide from the 4.2 section. when trying to run the preloader .29 step i get "Failed to get root, current ios36 has the fakesign bug fixed". i looked in the faq part and it says something about trucha bug restorer, which is apart of the other section of the lower versions. i tried to run trucha anyway but it fails when it tries to do something. please help.

so what should i do? just skip the preloader .29 part?

Another thing about preloader. If installing the new one with 4.2 don't you have to get rid of all your old hacks first with nand clean or something or can you now just skip that and install the new hacks over the old hacks from the previous system menu.

if you have wifi, then use dop-ios to install IOS 36 and ES_identify it.

New hacks install over old hacks.

That's what i thought but i always see people saying you need to run nand clean or hacks remover before adding the new hacks or whatever.

Also when i went from 4.0 to 4.1 i never "cleaned out" the old hacks before installing the new ones and all the new ones worked just fine.

This is a great guide as well.Makes it really nice to get all the files needed in one place instead of a guide that links to 10 different things to download and then unzip ext..
