Hey guys, picked up an xbox being sold locally quite cheap, opened it up as it doesn't appear to be modded but there is a modchip inside. Looks like an aladdin or some clone of one.

Anyway, it doesn't appear to be working as there is no alternative dash and the console won't boot any burnt discs such as hexen. It may be the drive itself though as it doesn't want to read an original disc either but it is quite scratched though.

Any way to test the chip or should I just throw it out and tsop flash? I believe it's a 1.5 console so it should work.

I did read about holding the power button for a few seconds to test the chip but the eject button starts flashing red and orange then it won't boot.

Ideas anyone?

Ok I gave it a shot and got error 05 which I believe relates to an unlocked hdd so I'm guessing the chip in this xbox is just pretty decoration!

Back to my original question then, do I need to remove it to tsop flash or can I leave it just sitting in there? I'm not very good at desoldering btw!!:D

So I decided to press on and just remove the chip. Took a while but I got there in the end and the xbox still works.

It's a 1.4 or 1.5 model so I soldered the points for tsop flash while I had the motherboard out of the case.

Opened up 2 of the pc's I have and neither are old enough to have an ide port!!! Only thing I have is an ide pci card which apparently don't work!

So now I'm looking around for the games that are used for softmodding, found a place nearby that has splinter cell for just 75p, I'll be getting that. Just need some method of transferring the game save as I don't have a memory card. USB may be my only option but getting compatible usb flash drives isn't easy.

This will be my first softmod of an Xbox so any tips or suggestions?

If you can track down an older 2 or 4gb flashdrive that would be your safest bet. Do you have the custom cable for that or are you making your own?
I'll probably be making my own. I've got some old breakaway cables and loads of old usb cables so why not, if it doesn't work out I can always order one.

I can get my hands on an old 2gb stick that I've had for about 12-13 years so hopefully that will work. If not then I don't know what else to go for because searching on eBay doesn't find much.

Remember to remove the supercap if it's not a 1.6.

Back in the day I used a cheap xploder USB adapter and an official Xbox memory card (managed to get the xploder adapter to work with action replay by forcing the drivers).

A quick look on ebay reveals these may be available for around £10-20.

Probably the route I'll have to take if my method doesn't work out.

One thing you should know about me is i don't spend money unless I have to. If I can find a cheap/free way of doing something I will. Missus says I'm just a tight git!! :rofl2:

Oh and by the supercap I assume you are talking about the clock cap??? If so, that was on my to do list.

Hi guys, need a little more advice

Managed to softmod the box and tsop flash. I am now trying to upgrade the hard drive. I have put a 250gb HDD in the box and used Hexen to prepare it which went fine. On rebooting the xbox gets stuck on the ind-bios splash screen and the eject button cycles through all three colours, red green and orange!!

I'm stumped at the moment, I've tried installing all dashboards using slayers but it still does the same.

Any suggestions? Obviously there is no problem with the hard drive as it was detected, formatted and dashboards can be installed so I am completely stuck on this one.

Never mind, managed to sort it. I set one of the dashboards as primary using slayers and it booted up just fine.
