Hacking Mod/hotkey combo to turn off the gamepad screen?

Trying to play Mario 3D World and the fact that the gamepad screen just mirrors the main screen for the most part is an irritating distraction plus a waste of battery as you simply can't turn off display whilst still using the controller for input so before I craft a custom made blackout cover to hide the screen is there any mod or hotkey combo out there to turn off the gamepad screen?

There's the homebrew padcon, which allows to turn off/on the gamepad screen when you press R3 (the right joystick button)

You can even assign a shortcut button when using haxchi, edit the config.txt before installing.

Very helpful, thanks for the pointer. Now to get modding, tut linked in the sticky seems current/valid so I'll have a browse and get cracking.
