As the title says.

I have my OLD phat PS2 thats been sat in the attic for ages doing nothing , to make use of it in some way i wanted to ask if it is possible to softmod it with next to nothing......

I dont have a PS1 game , action replay or anything else just a couple of original PS2 games none like 007 etc.

I could go and buy a ps1 game
I could buy a ps2 chip from dealextreme ( i can solder very well )

Is it possible to softmod a PS2 with a USB stick , PS2 memory card , a terrible choice of pre bought games

If not ill buy a mod chip and solder it in , no problem , just wanted to ask

Yup, FreeMCBoot is your best choice, as it works on every PS2 model. I've been using it for quite some time on my Slim with no problems.

I got an AR MAX from a friend to softmod mine, try the same, ask some of your friends if they have an AR MAX and if you can borrow it (you only need it once)

There are other games that can be used to install Free McBoot, not just 007. In theory all games that contain multiple .elf files should work for this -> you might be lucky if you have some demo discs.

It doesn't work on the later slims.

TY reading through now

No one has AR MAX im afraid or anything similar ( they are now part of the ps3/360 world) , im the only one sitting here bored off my head lol , as its an old console i just thought i'd tinker with it for a bit and see what can be done.

The chips only a couple of $ from DX and i could probably buy 007 from ebay for a few quid and do it that way , just wanted to see...

Many thanks for the replies , they were quick

You don't need a chip. I did this mod with 007 I found at my local gamestop for $4. The only other things you need is a memory card, a DVD-R, and a USB Stick/Adapter. Instead of soldering on a chip you will have to block the PS2 sensors which take about 2 mins with the tape/tissue method.

modchip is better, no disc swapping, no patches no nothing, just burn and play, why choose a swap magic or soft mod over everything else? if he can solder he should get a modchip, you won't have to mess around with all that stuff.

just a warning there is no more original Matrix Infinity anymore (my bad), i just had a quick look on deal extreme and it seems that they are all fakes, the original Matrix Infinity looks like this.

ps2-minfi.jpg

your best bet is to order the 1.99 Matrix Infinity as that seems to be the more stable according to psx-scene

also look up the MATRIX MANAGER that seems to let you install different config settings on the modchip when you get it, in some of these clones the config settings are disabled.

anyways i will leave it at that i have Christmas to celebrate lol

Since you got a phat PS2, if you can get hold of a PS2 network adapter, that's even better. HD loading ftw.

Sure, it's probably gonna cost you a few bucks, but then again, if you're gonna play more than a few games the dvdr:s might cost you more in the end.

The chip is still no waste of money, it'll come in handy since there are some complications with running HDL from a memory card. In my experience it works better to burn it to a cd and run it from there.

Everything you need to know about HD loading on PS2: http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=hd.html

Received my ps2 clone/fake matrix infinity 1.99 / modbo 475. Does anybody have an install diagram ? ps2 board says GH-019 N6.

Chip def loks like a modbo clone with matrix infinity printed on it.
