Minecraft creator refuses certification for Windows 8

*cough* Dreamcast *cough*
That's actually very true - the console did introduce certain features which were ignored back then but embraced by next generation systems. We owe *proper* online systems, web browsers on a console, the use of cameras, support of keyboards and mouses, among many others, to the Dreamcast.

An action movie can be fun without being aggressively juvenile and insulting. I'm not asking for high art, just for something good, and Bay can't even deliver on that.

I get your point here, really, but this is so basic of an assumption that clarification is redundant and needless; it dilutes the message, rather than strengthening it. Poe's Law really shouldn't have to apply here. The idea that when a person states their point of view, they are conveying their personal opinion on the matter is a pretty essential concept of communication, verbal or otherwise.

(If you want an example, take a look at our exchange over Michael Bay. I'm arguing because, hey, it's fun, and I want to convey my thoughts on the matter, but did I need you to clarify that you were speaking only for yourself? Did you feel the need to state "Now this is only in my opinion"? Of course not!)

As for Kafka... he was an author, not a director, but seeing how both he and Bay worked in creative mediums, I figured the connection fit. He was a prolific writer, one unlike any others of his time, and he produced a ton of works. Unfortunately, few were ever published in his lifetime, and he ultimately ending dying in obscurity. The point being, his lack of success doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of his work the same way Bay's enormous success doesn't reflect the quality of his own output.

(Also, are you sure you've never heard of him? The Metamorphosis, A Hunger Artist, the word "Kafkaesque"... none of it ringing a bell?)

I'm speaking mostly on the Transformers line of movies. I saw a few things that appeal to the lower denomination of humor, but most of it was gigantic explosions with the occasional good line of dialogue thrown in.

"Good" is a subjective term. Good to you means something different to someone else. Thus it is a great word for conveying opinions. Now if you had said that Micheal Bays movies were terrible, I may or may not be inclined to agree (now that I've stated I'm not though, this is just an example). Someone else might misconstrue the word "terrible" because it's a very decisive word that leaves little room for debate. "Terrible" doesn't have much sway in it's meaning. The same goes for "shit". Excrement is the lowest form of existence. Shit means the same to everyone thus it's prevents further debate with a "matter of fact" like tone. This is what causes flame wars and in-conducive discussion environments. It doesn't matter if this is your opinion to someone else if you don't explicitly say so. In these cases, further clarification is a must unless your goal is to incite flaming and or other posts that try to call you out. This is a common tactic use by trolls and reaction baiters.

As for Kafka, I'll check his work out. I've never heard of him personally.

You guys know you're both having a discussion about how "good" and "shitty" are different for each person right? You're kinda not talking about the subject at all...

ps: Minecraft is shit.

Why do you all fucking hate EVERYTHING? I hardly see anything positive here anymore.

You guys all hate Apple, you guys all hate Windws 8. All I see in this site is anger anymore.
Nobody is forcing you to use Windows 8 so calm the fuck down and grow up.

Minecraft runs on Windows 8 the same way it does on OS X: Not in the App Store.
So I don't see what the big deal is about. It's not like Notch is going to break Windows 8 machine's ability to run the thing (but if he does he is just fucking retarded).

Noted, now please let the mods do their own work. I'm sure there's a reason you're not one at the moment.

@iFish: Absolutely correct. You're one of the few people in this topic with enough sense to properly grasp the issue.

EDIT: I'm actually surprised. See, that's the reason I never put people on ignore. Sometimes they put something out that changes the way you look at them. Bravo iFish.

I'm not sure if I should be insulted or happy. Because on one hand, you said you wanted to put me on ignore, but on the other hand, you didn't ignore me.

I see what you did there. Wasn't very good, try harder if you want to troll me and piss me off :)

Also, I figured hey, why should this thread get derailed waiting for mods when me or any other member could tell you two to get back on topic. It creates a better chance of the thread not getting closed and posts not getting deleted.

You're not really doing much better yourself you know. If you really wanted to put it back on topic you could comment on the topic at hand. Besides, I never want to piss people off and I never try to, it just happens. The "noted" part was in reference to your attempt to get a rise out of me which failed. I think it's you who needs a bit of work. Though you get plenty of practice it seems.

I'm not your biggest fan, but the only thing I hate seeing is your Apple fanboyism. Not to say they don't make some great things, but you take it a bit far sometimes. Also, I never said I wanted to put you on ignore, I only said why I don't. You got about 5 respect points from me there, so I think you should be happy.

I think Notch should get it put on the app store personally. It would certify it and put average users minds at ease. Maybe he just doesn't want to put forth the effort.

I don't think non-Metro apps can get on the App Store. But I could be wrong.

Oops, I meant get it Windows 8 certified. Really all this certification does is say it passes basic hurdles for windows apps. In reality, it's not that big of a deal.

Am I the only one who thinks Notch is an obnoxious ass who has let the popularity of ONE game get to his head?
See, this is a common misconception. As far as I've seen, he's ALWAYS been like this. It's only since Minecraft became popular, however, that people started paying attention.

Many game devs "fight the current" like Notch does. The devs of The Witcher refusing to use DRM? The devs of Amnesia saying "fuck it" when asked about their anti-piracy efforts? But you don't hear anybody saying "The witcher devs are just looking for attention" or "Amnesia's devs are just trying to cause a stir because they think they have power."

You didn't hear about Notch's views before because people didn't pay attention before. Check out his older blog entries for examples. I was going to try a new payment method, but it turns out it was evil is an example, Notch is providing a simple statement about a practice he considers "evil". If such a thing were posted now, it'd repeated by news sites and people would get all butthurt about it (as this thread shows).

However, that examples was posted before minecraft was even in Alpha, back when nobody gave a fuck about the stuff he said.

Ignoring all of Notch's statements, all of this is happening because of the launcher not being certifiable in its current state?
I would be more concerned about the Java portion of Minecraft, than the launcher. Certifying the launcher is trivial, given the full outset of what Minecraft is.

You seem to think that Windows 8 is going to be instantly popular when in reality it's at least a couple of years off from even starting to hit mainstream. Look at how long Windows XP lasted on computers until Windows 7 took over.
I don't know about 8 as I haven't tried it or even read up on it, but historically we can expect microsoft to push their new OS. My point is that Notch doesn't accomplish anything with his comment, well except for getting some publicity I suppose.
When and if 8 becomes a bigger platform he still have to let his game get certified no matter how shitty he think it is.

In the end he only ends up hurting those wanting to play minecraft on windows 8.

No, he really doesn't have to get the game certified. In fact, no developer has to, unlike Nintendo's Seal of Approval on games back in the day, all Microsoft's certification does is confirm that the game runs on Windows 8. It's too bad ya know, that Microsoft didn't fucking damn well do that with Windows 7 and many of the older games on platforms like Steam, because it would have actually made sense to start ensuring certification of compatibility back when Windows 7 came out, not when Windows 8 hits. I guess they just want to cover their own hides when customers come bitching that games released within the last 5 years don't work on Windows 8, much like some 5 year old games don't work on Windows 7.

I just think it's the fact that he pulls a lot of stunts compared to others.

Saying DRM is bad is pretty common sense. I mean the gamers hate it and statistically it has shown to do little against piracy. It actually encourages it more. So saying "We hate DRM!" is just making sense.

However, boycotting an event (I forget which one it was) because it "supports SOPA/PIPA", joining the "Pirate Party", saying he won't put Minecraft on Steam because he thinks it's bad, and making an entire convention based around one game does feel very pompous.

Notch has always come off to me as someone who thinks he's better than he is. He made a lot on Minecraft but he almost considers Minecraft like a sword worth wielding. Like if Notch says something then it's got some real weight behind it. Because he made Minecraft.

Minecraft, opinions aside, is still just Minecraft. If Shiggy Miyamoto said "I think X is bad" when it comes to gaming, I'll consider it more than Notch's. Miyamoto has been THE gaming guy. If Valve or its higher ups say something is bad, I'll consider it too. But Notch made one game that he has been riding mercilessly. He has literally said he's trying to get as much out of Minecraft. It's why it gets iOS/Android ports, Xbox Live ports, and of course your various knick-knacks. I just find him to come off as a bit obnoxious and almost like he views himself as some real game changer in gaming.

tl;dr Notch seems to do a lot of dick-wagging before he's hit puberty.

The issue is how much of what he says is reported as news. Sites will often take tweets or blog entries and post them as if they were official company statements or something. It gets pretty annoying.

http://mashable.com/2012/01/17/sopa-companies-dark-list/
All these sites reacted to SOPA with a form of boycott as well, including big names like Mozilla and Wikipedia.

joining the "Pirate Party"
Well god forbid anybody have political views.

The Swedish pirate party is for reform of copyright laws. You know who else thinks copyright laws need a reform? The US Library of Congress.

and making an entire convention based around one game does feel very pompous.
Because we all know that the 4,500 people that showed up were imaginary and didn't actually have any interest in the game, right?

I don't see why Notch is so special. Other gave devs and companies do this shit and people urge them on. Notch says something on his twitter, a news site reports it, and GBAtemp's testosterone rage flares up.

I never even heard of the guy but it's like everybody has a hard on for him and can't stop posting about him. But he's still obnoxious and thinks the sun shines out his ass.
