Minecraft was fun for a while, but when you release an unfinished game on the promise that paying customers will be treated to regular updates, and you fail to deliver...JackDeeEss said:So everyone goes to loving Minecraft to hating it?
What is this.
Well, contrast it to Terraria, which from the very beginning already had a much better realised environment, a grand number of different weapons (many of which cannot be crafted), a grand variety of enemies and even BOSSES, actual NPCs to interact with, dungeons that aren't a box in the ground, better water physics, and frankly in general some actual gameplay.
The only thing Terraria doesn't have going for it is the lack of creativity when compared to Minecraft, which allows you to create some very nice voxel artwork. The cross-section of mode of gameplay truly encourages exploration, shortening the process by allowing you to glimpse through the darkness and into the walls for valuables underground, rather than dig blindly in the pursuit of maybe three diamonds.
Where Minecraft will make you work for everything of value, ranging from armour to building materials and even just waiting for metals to smelt, Terraria cuts to the chase and delivers your rewards as you earn them, giving you so much more time to experience many new things.
The game also bears heavy influence from SNES titles, graphically the sprite artwork resembles Final Fantasy Characters, and items include reference to Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. This makes sense, since I've heard that apparently the guys who made Terraria where responsible for Super Mario Bros X, the best fan-game I have played in a long time. (Sadly it looks like they were ordered by Nintendo to remove the game).
I actually bought Terraria simply because I knew of their involvement in SMBX and it turned out to be the best risk I've taken in a long time.
