Nintendo’s First Smart Device App is a Free-to-Start Social Experience

Don’t miss out on being a part of a Nintendo first! On March 31, Miitomo, the company’s first-ever smart device application, is launching in the United States and several other countries. Miitomo is a free-to-start social experience that lets users spark one-of-a-kind conversations with friends in a whole new way using Mii characters. The app recently launched in Japan and was downloaded more than 1 million times in its first three days of availability, while achieving the #1 most downloaded free app status in both the App Store and Google Play storefronts.

Miitomo is a free-to-start social experience that lets users spark one-of-a-kind conversations with friends in a whole new way using Mii characters.

Getting started with Miitomo and being a part of this Nintendo milestone is easy: After downloading the application for free on the App Store for iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, along with Android devices, users create a Mii character and customize facial features like eyes and hair, as well as voice and personality. Users can also use the camera on their smart devices to snap a photo of themselves, which can be used to create a Mii, or they can simply import their Mii from their Wii U or Nintendo 3DS systems using a QR Code.

Once their Mii is ready, users can add friends who already have the app in person, or by linking the app with their existing Facebook or Twitter accounts. After that step is complete, it’s time to answer some questions! Miitomo creates conversations and turns discussions into a form of play by prompting users to answer all kinds of fun questions. How would you define your fashion style? What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? If you were given ten grand to spend in one day, what would you do? The answers get shared among friends, sparking interesting conversations – part of the fun is discovering unexpected facts about your friends. When users hear how their friends responded to questions, they can give answers a “heart” or a written or picture comment.

Oh wow... There are so many things I hate about this. First of all, I f*cking *hate* Mii's - they're not endearing, they look terrible. System after system I pray that they phase them out, but it would seem that the opposite is taking place. Secondly, this is the realization of our worst nightmares when it comes to social interactions - the Internet already made conversations very impersonal, this completely removes the human element by replacing free expression with candid responses. It's as if Facebook and Tinder had a baby, and that's horrifying. Worse, it's like one of those creepy Japanese dating sims, except in real life. "I like pasta, you like pasta too, I like you, you like me? Yes or no?" Thirdly, of all the things they could've done, all the great properties they could've used, the wealth of different genres Nintendo dabbled in... we get this - pretend Facebook. I'm really not impressed. I'm sick of companies trying to shove the "social" angle into everything, and this seems to be nothing *but* "social" game mechanics. It sounds like one of those crappy online quizzes that tell you which character from Lion King you are based on some generic questions, except turned into a game. Lastly... "free-to-start"? Why not call it "pay-to-continue", because that's what it all comes down to. It's not even Freemium, it's what old PC people like myself are familiar with under a different name - a trial version. Specifically, one that asks you for money immediately after the trial has ended, except you could at least cheat those. I don't see any reason why anyone would drop any money for a quiz game with Mii's - it seems like a product that should come as a freebie with something else, like Wii Sports. For shame, Nintendo.

Seeing shit like this really makes me wish for Nintendo to crash and burn. I don't think that's the response the big N is looking for though.

They've completely gone off the deep end with this one, and it's been a long time coming. Slowly but surely they're forgetting that they used to be a gaming company - now they're all about "unique experiences", "inclusiveness" and "innovation". My NES wasn't inclusive or social when I played Castlevania on it - it kicked my ass relentlessly and I liked it. Now to get the same experpience, you boot Bloodborne, which shows you exactly where each company stands on this.

I've been playing it and its not gonna win any awards and there is nothing super mind blowing about it, but I enjoy it for what it is and you can earn rewards for My Nintendo by playing it, which is all I care about.

So many people sippin' on the Haterade.

They already had PlayStation Home, which is pretty much the equivalent of this, and it dropped like a lead zeppelin.

Why is it so hard for *seasoned veterans of the industry* to make mobile games that don't suck? A child could think of a better concept than this. Here's a billion dollar idea Nintendo, and I'm giving this to you as a freebie. You take a popular game-juggernaut that can be played with nothing more than a D-pad and one or two buttons, like Mario. You make a bunch of free levels, a full game, to get people hooked, and then you offer extra worlds for cash. They could be themed stuff, like Mario on Zebes or Mario in Dreamland, the potential is endless here. You let people make their own stages too, and share them on social media or via BT/WiFi/NFC. F*cking killer, you can keep that going with non-stop expansions for years, just expand the overworld. Here's another one -Zelda. You know what was cool about the 2D Zeldas? The inventive dungeons. So you make a dungeon crawler, except it's all dungeons made by other people that you get randomly spawned into - non-stop gameplay. Want to add cool features to your dungeon? Sure, pay up and you can have a Reggie wallpaper, done. Third one, probably most obvious choice - Animal Crossing. You can earn bells the usual way oooor you can buy bells for cash, and everyone will because AC people have no self-control. Money in the bank, like taking candy from a baby. Here's another one - Mario Kart with tilt controls and custom courses, bam. How about s Metroid Prime-like competitive FPS, or Splatoon Mobile? Easy-peasy. Fire Emblem Online with skirmishes against friends or in co-op mode in a story mode divided into bite-sized chunks you can drop in and out of on your commute, Jesus Christ, it's not hard. Make a video game, anything, anything *but* this.

Hahaha, I forgot all about PlayStation Home. God, that was bad.

And that might be one of the best ideas I've ever heard for a Zelda game on mobile.

Yeah, it's pretty much just facebook/twitter meets Mii Plaza. I mainly only care about it cause you can get rewards for stuff on My Nintendo through it. I, too, am over the Mii's but Nintendo has made it clear; Mii's are here to stay.

    I am a certified genius. It's really bizzare that people would enjoy a fantasy fun adventure in a fantasy fun adventure game, am I right or what? ;O;

Yeah you is. Haha, too bizarre in fact. I think they said by 2017 there will be five(?) mobile games out. Maybe Zelda will be one of them. But it will be free-to-play with an in-game store to buy bombs, fairies and other things Link will need. Master Sword will be subscription based, $5.99 a month.

Nintendo does have a lot of good ideas, but the way they execute some of them leaves something to be desired.

    Gambia, The

    so much wrong with this.
    1. imagine people were whining about that when they released g&w or the nes. 'they're forgetting they used to be a hanafuda and toy company!'
    2. the nes was inclusive because it was cheap and widely available
    3. it was also social, it was supposed to be a family console and didn't come with two controller ports by accident
    4. ignore entirely that these old games were hard in part because they had incredibly stupid gameplay mechanics, like flying backwards at every hit and death holes everywhere. also clunky controls.
now a game like shovel knight improves on stupid mechanics and controls and suddenly gets much more accessible, having to rely on other stupid nonsense to make stuff challenging, like boss rush and 20 form final boss

no, they specifically wont release actual games.
